I get it. The Neo is about making an inexpensive MacBook. Early indications are that it’s a hit (some configurations are sold out at Apple Stores until April). But now that it’s clear that an A18 Pro is capable of powering a Mac in 2026, I’m asking a hypothetical question. If Apple were to release a 2lb 12” ultralight like the ill-fated 2015 MacBook, but powered by the A18 Pro and sporting the 12” MacBook design (but with a “Magic Keyboard”), 1 USB-C port and all, for $999, would you buy it? I’m an emphatic YES.

Isn't that what the NEO is?
Not really. The 12” MacBook was 2 lbs. The MacBook Air and the Neo are both 35% heavier. My question is whether you would buy a “premium” ultralight with the Neo’s technical specs for $300 more than the Neo.

Same specs no way. If it was 300 more but also 16gb ram instead of 8. And 512gb minimum. And backlit keyboard and better screen possibly. And at least one USB 4 Thunderbolt 4 or 5 port. And separate charging port magsafe. Then yes. Same specs no.

Guess people really miss the 12" rMB back in the day?

I sort of outgrew it over the years. My 2017 12" rMB was due for a refresh.
Very fragile compared to the Neo. Opening with 2 hands and had to make sure the hinges don't get stressed.

I am loving my Neo that replaces the 12" even though it's thicker - but durability comes in for travel use.

If a new 12" comes out, maybe will bite, but I am currently very happy with the Neo.

Sounds like you have become a "Neophyte."

No, I'd expect some more improvements. It would need 2 USB-C ports with one of them TB3/4, along with the upgraded SoC and all the other latest standards. I would buy it instantly even if it was the same price as the MacBook Air.

I love my 12" MacBook 2016. Still use it. The main attraction was the portability (height + width + thickness + weight + battery life + build quality all together).

I was disappointed with the Neo but I was clearly not in the target market. As a budget entry it's amazing.

Yes, I figured since the ultralight & tiny 12" didn't coming back, this is a great time to get the first gen Neo at a fantastic low price!

Who knows, next iteration might be a pricier Neo with 3D printed casing which will save a lot on weight.

0.6 lbs of extra weight compared to my 12" rMB isn't going to be a detriment for me.

My iPhone Air's lower weight and thinner design will offset it for travel ! 😱
