What are your thoughts on buying a used MK?
It looks pretty clean and only 6 months old.

Are these pretty reliable?
Unfortunately, with buying used, there are no returns or guarantees.

Heck yeah. I don't like buying used iPads personally, but accessories definitely. Just ask the guy that you would like to inspect it prior to buying. How hard can testing out a keyboard be ;)

I've bought loads of accessories, especially to avoid the 'Apple Tax'. Apple honors the warranty from date of purchase too, so you would still have 6 months left if you had any issues. Just mainly check for clear drop or user damage. If it looks good on the outside, 99% it will function perfectly.

I would personally check the condition if possible.
The MKB exterior material doesn‘t age very well, just like the SFK.

If its in a good condition definitely, I would also try it out first just be sure it isnt faulty in any way.

The magic keyboard will only look good for a few months anyway, I have had mine for just over a month and it is already starting to look bad so have put a leather skin on it.

I really hope apple release this thing in a better material soon, as don’t want to have to get a new one every couple of years.

Thats not what I want to hear. How can Apple charge so much for an item that looks bad in just a few months?

Ive seen some skins in another thread that look like they do a good job of covering the surface. But not sure there’s any way around fraying of the edges.

Well mine is only a month or so old and already one side of the cases seam is looking a bit screwed, wasn’t like this out of the box, so think it has somehow stretched and not gone back... see pics of both sides...

In answer to your question, this is typical apple, release a sub par product for gen 1, so people buy gen 2... I think apple will release this keyboard with a far better material either in 2021 or 2022... I just hope its sooner rather than later... if they released the exact same product in leather or other harder wearing material tomorrow, I would sell mine and instantly buy it.

Just found out that mine has this too last night.
First time I notice the design, I knew sooner or later this will not stay perfect long. It’s a design flaw.
Would like to know if you manage to successfully fix it somehow?

I wouldn’t say it that way, because generally first gen products has many flaws that needs to be improved in the next ones. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab keyboard cover is not perfect either. So it’s not necessarily for them to do this on purpose to get us buy their products as many times. Not that I’m not complaining about first gen products.

My concern is, the Smart Folio Keyboard that has been around for years uses the same materials and durability as the current magic keyboard, so they did not improve these products over the years.

Try and find it brand new on places like Craigslist. Shouldn’t be too hard to find unused accessories at a steep discount. I just got mine on Craigslist for $300 CAD, which was $150 cheaper than retail.

If it’s used I would demand atleast a 50% discount from retail price.

No I think once it’s like this it is pretty much stuck this way... the material is literally stretched.

I just hope it doesn’t get worse as I have seen ‘6 months later’ vids on YouTube where that area has started fraying so I am guessing in a few months that area will all be frayed.

Do you mind posting a pic of yours?

Must be a weak point in the design for it to be in the exact same place on both of our keyboards... you got the 11 or 12.9... mines the 11
11” as well. The design decision to make it loos rather than sticking to the metal hinge is understandable, but the poor material choosing is bad decision by Apple.

Yeah 100% it should have been leather at it’s premium price point, leather would be far more forgiving than this material, I just hope that Apple realise this upon refreshing the MK.

I also hope that the next iteration is compatible with previous generation iPads rather than just the new ones
