I have a chance to buy this truck for $3000 but there are a few things wrong with it.

1. The AC doesn't work and now that summer is coming up that could be a problem.
2. Was an East Coast truck so there is a significant amound of rust in the under carriage.
3. It's only a 2 seater and I would rather have an EXT. Cab.
4. The paint is in really bad condition.
5. It's purple, but that doesn't really matter. I can just get a paintjob.

Upsides to it is

1. It's 4x4
2. 6 Cyclinder
3. Transmission and engine runs great. 5 speed manual.

It has 124,000 miles on it.

Engine has been kept pretty clean though

Overall the truck runs pretty good and the motor has plenty of power.

Point 1: let's say you buy the truck for 3 grand. I had my A/C fixed two years ago (Ford Expedition) and it cost me $1480. A cheap paint job where they just paint the outside of the panels and leave the inside purple will set you back another $400-500. So now you're out 5 grand for a rusted, half-purple compact pickup with 124k miles on it.

Point 2: You said you want an EXT cab, and this is a 2-seater. That's one heckuva do-it-yourself upgrade, I'd say :eek:

I would run, not walk, away from this deal for those reasons.

Do you really need a truck? Or are you just looking for a way to get around? Invest in a used Corolla or a used Camry. They're dirt-cheap to insure, and you're going to get another good few years out of them with a basic oil change.

Why a Corolla or Camry? What's wrong with a truck?

It would probably be around $700 to fix the AC but I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with it, that's just a rough estimate

Here's the thing with an A/C repair - typically if you repair part of the system, for example the compressor, you also have to repair several other parts in order to get the warranty on your compressor.

When I had my compressor replaced two summers ago, I was told I could have the compressor clutch repaired for $300 with no warranty. In order to get a warranty, I had to buy the entire compressor, plus an air dryer, valves, tubing, etc. I'm talking about the warranty you get from buying the thing at Auto Zone or NAPA (look it up - it's true), not the garage trying to gouge me. Be careful.
