You're looking at paying roughly the same whether you buy the phone outright or buy it on contract. A lot of people go with contracts because they can't afford to buy the phone outright. If you can afford it, it doesn't make a huge difference.

If you're going to be skint once you've bought the phone, just get it on contract and put the money in a savings accont instead!

I paid $950 for the unlocked 64GB... I just dont like being tied down to contracts... And iPhones always get a good resale value... So doesnt bother me much.. Becomes more like an investment...

So you had to start a new line (phone number) in order to get a discount?

Bought new phone from Apple (199.00)after canceling flip phone and paid cancellation fee. My flip phone had a two year contract and a cancellation fee of $175.00 minus $5.00 each month I had it, than got another phone with another number, and started another contract. The smartphones however have a $350.00 cancellation fee minus $10.00 each month you have it. USA of course....;)

I would. I paid around $800 for 32GB Unlocked 4S. I hate being in contract and Pay as you go plans are super super cheap here in Mumbai. 1.8 US cents for 1 min call or 0.03 US cent per second.

That's cheap compared to what I see in ebay (localized listing - not US). I see about $800 for 16GB, 32GB is even higher.

PS - True about call rates. I can't even imagine how I pay so less for my monthly bill.

You should come to HK.

For some odd reason, Apple HK set the limit to 10 iPhones per person....which of course, if you look at the phone market in Hong Kong, you'll know that this is potential earnings for people who own phone shops. People bought them and resold them off to phone shops earning roughly $2500 each.

The entire stock was rinsed dry within a few hours.....now they're all situated in Sin Tat Plaza in Mong Kok with prices set at over $6000HKD (~£500) for the 16Gb models when in fact the actual price is only $5088 (~£402)

When it first came out, the prices were up to $8000 to over $10000HKD depending on the model.

I couldn't wait for Apple to get stock and I sure as hell wasn't going to pay hiked up prices so I ended up getting it on contract.

I paid $5088HKD for the phone straight off when I signed up the contract, my monthly plan is $419HKD which gives me 3900 minutes and unlimited internet and wifi/tethering.....oh and that $5088HKD is returned back to my monthly plans so I'm only paying between $133-$280HKD a month (depending on months) for my contract.

It depends...

Are you planning on using with AT&T? TMO? Will you be traveling? $1000 is a lot, no doubt, but the people saying they would only spend $200 on contract are missing a few things. First, if you are traveling, you cannot go with a contract or else you will pay out the rear for minutes and data. Depending on how much you travel and use these features while abroad, $1000 will add up really, REALLY quickly. If you are going with TMO, you get to deal with EDGE speeds (in most locations), BUT their rates are much cheaper. You don't even have to go with a data plan if you don't want to. That's a savings of at least $15 per month x 24 months which turns out to be $360 in the data package alone. TMO also has a much cheaper minutes/texting plan than AT&T which would net you a savings of at least another $10 per months for another $240 in savings. Add that all up and all of the sudden you aren't really paying all that much for your phone at all. It's just that you're dropping that all at once rather than over time in the form of your monthly bill.

I paid €750 or so for a 32GB 4S which is $980 so yeah... I would. I would never get an expensive contract like so many of you though...

Unfair.
There's houses and houses. But there's just one iPhone 4S (with different storages).

True, I was just saying in general. There's houses, locations, different sizes etc...
Some that have the money and its worth it to them will pay the price.
And as you can see Apple can barelly keep them in stock as it is. Factory unlocked iphones are selling fast like hotcakes.

Since I can get an unlocked 64GB model for $850, no I wouldn't spend $1000. But in a hypotetical scenario where I had to spend $1000 to get an unlocked iPhone... I probably would.

1000 US dollars? That's what the 32 GB version costs where I live (NOK 5790 to be accurate). So if I could get a 64 GB iPhone 4S for only a grand, then sure!

I pay £10 (about $15) a month for 250 minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited internet on a phone I paid £500 (about $750) for. I tallied this up and it's a far better deal than any contract. I even went into shops run by networks and asked them to beat my deal, and they all told me right out that they couldn't. I can only get this deal because I use pay as you go, NOT contract. The main reason the deal is so much better, aside from the great price, is the fact my network also pays me, so I in fact make a profit each month.

As I said, if you tally it up, the upfront cost is worth the smaller overall cost. But you sometimes have to shop around and find really good deals ;)

Is that on giffgaff? Seems like a pretty awesome deal. I'm currently on 3 on a sim only contract (bought the phone separate) - 300 minutes/unlimited texts/1gb internet @ £10/month.

We might have to pay alot for the phone here in the UK but our plans seem ALOT cheaper than US ones.

Yep, been on giffgaff pretty much ever since I got my iPhone 4 a year ago and I love it. Best network I've ever used :)

3 have good deals but I find their customer service to be extremely unreliable and I know that, if I ever have a problem, I'll become very stressed if I have to ring them up to get it sorted. That said, my short experience with T-Mobile wasn't exactly much better (and it was short for a reason). I like giffgaff because they give you the good deals but still have very good online based customer service (I've had nothing but good experience with both the forums and the agents) and of course they pay me!

Yeah I think that's the best way to look at it. I mean when you consider that in the US other top phones aren't much cheaper than the iPhone on contract it makes it even more amazing as here in the UK the iPhone is by far the most expensive on contract compared to EVERY other phone yet our iPhone plans are much cheaper than theirs.

But hey, considering the amount of times we get ripped off on other stuff it's only fair. :)

Couldn't agree more on Giffgaff, amazing network and amazing prices, doesn't get much better.

As for 3 I agree, I had a LG Viewty a few years ago with them and their CS was absolute b******* to say the least. :) Never going back on contract I think now to be fair, GG is the way to go.

Hell no. I would only purchase a phone for contract price.

Hahaha. Funny guy.

Anyways, I think paying $1000 for a 4S is pretty damn ludicrous personally. I mean, yeah, it's one of the nicest phones you can get ATM... but it's a ****ing phone :confused: Like really, I love technology but if your main priority in life is a phone you need to get checked. I'd just get a 4 off contract for a cool $599 or whatever its going for now.

Holy ****. I thought my unlimited talk/text with pay as you go 3G was a good plan at $25 a month...
