this is far too simple to ask people to pay for this service. a better approach would be as an Analog to Digital Conversion Service, updating people's old LP's to Apple Lossless Compression, etc.

I agree, you would probably have better luck charging people to water their lawns for them. Ripping CD's is such a passive effort and requires little work besides swapping CDs. While the process may take several minutes setup is just seconds. It's also so easy today, maybe a few years ago when it was "new" but now it's really just a click or two.

You would probably be better off trying to form a niche market taking old recordings, vinyl, reel-to-reel, 8-track, etc. and converting them to MP3/AAC. This requires a lot more time and/or specialized equipment but more likely a service someone would pay for.

But they say a sucker is born every minute, so if you can actually find someone to pay for it go for it.

I've already paid to have my CD's converted.

I'm from Canada but i live in New Zealand so i wanted all of my music without having to ship 200+ cd cases.

Solution.....

Pay my brother $60 to rip them and send them to me on DVD's and i have no worries about the system he is using to rip them because i set it up myself before i left. The only major point that he had about it was that he didn't have a time limit. I think he ended up doing it over a month and a half whenever he had a free moment.

Was well worth it to me :)

hell no. would you pay someone to wipe your butt when you're done too? What is this world coming to?
I actually thought that was part of the job description for people helping out those that can no longer help themselves. ;)

Which almost sounds like some of the uber professionals who have lost track of their own lives.

Are you kidding? Why would I give my music away and pay for it at the same time? I like my music in its original CD format through the CD deck > amp > headphones.

Well I'm very confused how you would work this out. If you are planning to get people to mail them to you, it's surely going to be very expensive and you will run the risk of getting them broke in the post.

Also, while I know cable and DSL connections are fast, most are capped at extremely limited upstream. If you plan on sending them back, expect 128-512kbit/sec (I know some do more but the max DSL can go to is 1mbit) which is going to be a lot, lot slower than ripping them yourself.

You may have to consider the legality of such a service aswell. I'm sure the RIAA woudln't be too pleased.

Seems nobody told these guys it wouldnt work.

Wow. I need to be more enterprising or less honest--whichever they are. 4 orders a month gives you a decent living. Surly there are 4 suckers a month who will pay to have their CDs ripped. Wow.

Not surprising to me. It's about twice what I'd pay to have it done--which is why if it ever gets done, I'll end up doing it myself.
