I have a new 1.25 GHZ eMac... It is a good value for a good machine... I use FCE on it all the time & burn DVD's on a regular basis... I also have an iMac & the eMac compares favorably to it... At this point for the kind of money you're looking to spend- there is no reason to wait for WWDC , or even consider an iMac... Get the eMac- you just won't do any better than this for at or under a grand...

I had one but hated it. Sold it to get an iBook G4.

It performs fine, but keep in mind that it's really not built very well, they have a high defect rate, and, as on the old CRT iMacs, if you play audio using the internal speakers it causes ripples and major screen distortions on account of the powerful magnets ******* with the CRT. It's also very big and bulky weighing 50lbs and a ***** to move because its made of smooth plastic, which gets very slippery, and there are no handles. Also, if you get it, you're going to want to get the tilt-n-swivel stand so you can adjust the viewing angle, and that's another 50 bucks. ONLY get it if you can't afford anything better, that's the absolute only reason why anyone who isn't an educational institution should ever consider getting an eMac.

Oh yeah, keep in mind, unlike most Macs which have fabulous resale value, the eMac resale value is absolutely h o r r i b l e, you can see some selling on eBay with a 1GHz G4, superdrive, a gig of ram, etc... for like $600. You can find old G3 iBooks selling for more than that.

My advice: Wait until Apple updates the iMac line, and get one of those instead. It's bound to be a hell of a lot better machine, and look better too.

aight, i have an emac... so where to start?

love this thing. it's built great - solid. easy to pick up despite it's 68 lb shipping weight and smooth plastic.
the screen only flickers when you have it set to the highest loudness, which i don't often do when i'm sitting right in front of it - they do get reasonably loud. not earth shattering loud, but you won't find yourself sitting in front of it if/when the speakers cause the screen to flicker.
resale value:

check this out before you say it - you can sell emacs (used) on ebay for usually 50-100 bucks more than you can buy them refurbed at the apple store (Which comes w/one year warranty, all software, etc). so the resale value isnt bad at all.

but most importantly, its the computer that made me realize that i don't need a g5... it would still be nice, but the emac handles a lot in stride.

just get it some more ram...
