Not talking bout the current pros, talking bout Kaby Lake chip specs hasn't been announced yet as the KB Iris 620 is replacement of SL Iris 520, I wonder if we'll see KB Iris 640 and 650.

We should do but they probably won't go into a MacBook Pro until the second half of next year!!

Waiting for Kaby just for Kaby itself is pointless.
If you are waiting for a price drop, okay, might happen.
Performance wise there isn't much to gain. Same CPU architecture with different clock speed and small advantages in manufacturing. 620 seems to be about 15% better than 520, this pattern will continue with other iGPUs.

I think there would be no much point upgrading.

Slightly better screen, a bit lighter and a bit thinner for a lot of money vs better ports, better keyboard and MagSafe. The touch bar is a wash in my opinion. I'd rather take the hardware Esc and volume up/down. TouchID is nice but hardly a deal breaker. I've had fingerprint readers on laptops before. It's not anywhere as important as having it on a phone, and it's not that big a deal on a phone to begin with.

Even if you had money to throw away, I think it makes no sense, unless you truly want one of the new things and money is absolutely no object.

Anyone with a 2015 model who upgraded is stupid or is stupid rich. There really is no point to upgrading. I have a mid 2010 so im happy with the 2016 model but i dont really see too much of a reason for someone with a 2015 model to upgrade

Eh, I did this.

I have a 2015 15" and bought the non-TB 2016 13".

I really just wanted something smaller for work. My work backpack is stuffed already, and the 13" is actually a little smaller than the 12" iPad Pro (and much more capable) - so it seems like a good upgrade.

I had the 12" but my wife took that, and the 13" is only a little bigger than the 12", so, why not?

15" stays home for VMs/Logic Pro X.

I'm also wondering about different things. But it's also off topic;) for KB there is a sticky

I meant going from 15 to 15inch. You had a pretty valid reason since you wanted a smaller computer

I thought the performance gain is more to do with 4K? Or it's just viewing 4K will use less CPU?

Really? I thought Kaby will be announced in Jan and should be in MBPs by March

And.. your question is on what basis? It's not going to be a downgrade, for sure.
Half the cores. Half the RAM. Lesser GPU. Not to say the smaller screen as well... Definitely downgrade in performance and potential productivity.

That and the fact that a 13" screen is not comparable to a 15" screen. It's apples and oranges, unless if they're just toys to the user.

For me, the difference in screen size means a complete change in the kind of work that I can do.

Currently I borrow a 13" Macbook Pro, and I use it for reading, writing, web browsing. Mainly for studying from e-textbooks (because my 1600x900 windows laptop makes the textbook look pixelated, since the textbook is vector pictures of text, rather than scalable text).

If I were to have a 15" Macbook Pro, I could run multiple apps on the same screen for certain purposes. I wouldn't need to switch to my 27" desktop screen for certain things. On the flip-side, I would be less likely to carry the 15" laptop with me when I'm not certain if I need it.

Was more comparing between a Mid 2015 /earlier 15" to the 2016 15". Of course 15" to 13" would be a downgrade.

Well, yeah. 2015 to 2016 15", I would hope is not a downgrade. But the OP is specifically looking at the touch bar 13".

The question is why do you want to upgrade? It obviously isn't for performance, as you are taking a hit on GPU, CPU, and RAM. Not display size as you are downsizing there. So do you need more portability? As that seems to be the primary benefit to swapping for you.

Depends on what I want to do, and none of it would have to do with the processor specs (which, iirc, don't matter much because some reports are that it's way faster in real-world use).

The biggest thing for me would be the touch bar. If I have any interest in writing new apps, I would be silly to not want to try to figure out the best ways to use it. I don't see it disappearing from the Mac -- I'd expect it to expand across the range, actually, including the desktop keyboards -- so I would need to work with it as much as possible.

So, I would vote "yes", but because of the touch bar and no other reason in your poll.

I'd keep it, don't upgrade. the 2015 was battle tested too, look at all the 2016 threads with issues.

Well, I have a 13" 2015 MBP, and I'm upgrading. For me, the 15" is now small and light enough for me to use, and the discrete graphics card and extra SSD are a good upgrade. Upgrading from a 15" to the new 15" though isn't nearly the same jump.

Well, I have a 13" 2013 MBP, and I'm upgrading. For me, the 15" is now small and light enough for me to use, and the discrete graphics card and extra SSD are a good upgrade. Upgrading from a 15" to the new 15" though isn't nearly the same jump.
Well, 13" 2013 != 15" 2015.

I think a lot of people are going to buy the update despite what anyone tells them. Consuming is something that triggers a dopamine hit, it brings people joy. A lot of this can be identified by the mindset of the said person a few weeks after the purchase. They will often feel remorse, and often return the product due to the temporary high wearing off. They may also realize that they in fact do not need the product, you could call it "seeing clearly" now that the nostalgia of "new" has worn off.

It really is a psychological issue and I think anyone who holds the mindset that "this brings me no additional value, I do not need it" should really appreciate having that self control. To you it may be instinct, however to a lot of people that is a concept very difficult to comprehend.

I upgraded to the 15-inch mid 2015 in January without any thought that there would be a re-design the following October, kinda regret that decision though. but do you think it would worth the price to upgrade to the late 2016 MBP (touchbar version) from mid-2015? This is clearly the latest version before the re-design.

Thing is, I find the 15-inch version of late 2016 too pricey, and I'd just go with the lowest 13" with touchbar, which would cost $1799 before tax. So, basically it can be a slight downgrade from 16GB to 8GB of RAM and another downgrade from i7 to i5 (unless I'm willing to throw in extra 300 bucks for the i7) from my previous MBP. Or idk if the i5 on late 2016 is faster than i7 on 2015. It has served me alright but this upgrade is just undeniable for me.

Or just wait for a possible price reduction and processor upgrade in 2017? (Please answer if you think that it may happen before mid 2017)

Nope, I'd wait for the first update and for a (hopeful) price drop.

The new one is fancier. Well better be honest, eh?

I upgraded from the early 2015 13" MBP to the 2016 13" with touch bar. The screen sold it for me. The quality isn't "slightly" better. It's obviously better. I had them side-by-side when I was transferring data and the 2016 model has better colors and a overall better and more vibrant look.

At first, the touch bar has a coolness factor but once I started incorporating it into my work flow I started realizing the benefits. For me, it's sort of like having a part of iOS on the keyboard.

Also, the upgrade really won't be that costly. I can easily get $1000 for my 2015 model and it still has 2 years left on AppleCare. I also got a military discount on the 2016 model which helps. Win-win as far as I'm concerned.
