Absolutely. I honestly don't see a place for the MacBook Air in apple's lineup. As soon as a core M / 5 watt chip can drive a 13" Retina display well enough, the MacBook Air will be gone.

There's just not enough differentiation to justify the resources to keep it around.

But you missed my point. There will be so little difference between a larger MB and MBP that it will not generate new sales, just stealing sales from people looking to buy the MBP.

Secondly, Apple's obsession with thinness means we'll most likely see a thinner MBP as well, so if you want a thinner laptop just wait until the next revision of the MBP line

Apple can't go much thinner on the Mbp and keep the ports. No, a 14 to 15" rMB would be a sweeter spot especially if they can keep weight about the same.

I just can't see Apple doing this. I've been wrong before but lets just take in what they'll have if they do that.

Apple will have a series of 11", 12", 13", 14" and 15" laptops. I think that's just overkill, perhaps they'll kill off the MBA line at that point but I don't see a huge need for a 14" laptop when they already have a 13" and 15" laptop
No one saw a huge need for the 12" either. Yet here we are. If Apple can create a revenue stream they will make it.

I'd like a 14 inch, but smaller than the current 13 inch air, kind of like they did with the 12 inch and the 11 inch air.

As soon as the rMB was announced I couldn't wait for the 14" version. For me it made sense that Apple would end up with rMBs at 12 and 14" with rMBPs at 14 and 16". But now I'm not so sure While a 14" rMB might sound good on paper there are a few things that could compromise it
  • A larger screen would need a higer retina resolution which would cause the GPU to be stretched further than it currently is
  • As many are predicting, the MBPs are probably getting a redesign which is likely to make them thinner (smaller logic board, move to USB-C ports) so a 14" rMB might be a bit redundant
I think as many are pointing out, the rMB is more about portability than anything else. In fact, I think Apple may have screwed up the naming a bit - I would have thought the following would be the end result:

MacBook Air - Core M chips, 12" display, fanless, USB-C port
MacBook - Core i5/i7 dual core chips, 14" display, 2xUSB-C ports and SD slot
MacBook Pro - Core i5/i7 quad core chips, 16" display, full ports

This would return the Air range for the companian/travel laptop, the MacBook being the everyday laptop with enough power to get most things done and the MBP being the laptop with full on processing power. It would also eliminate sizes from each range and simplify things a lot.

I dont think I'd like a larger rMB. I just took delivery of mine today, and I love the keyboard. Wouldnt mind seeing Apple implement that in the rMBP lineup some day.
