In a nutshell, 6 drivers had to be rescued by the police in a life threatening situation because Apple Maps sent them on an errand journey on a forsaken desert road, 70 miles away from where they were supposed to be. Apparently they were driving from town to town, not some kind of safari.
This is how B.A.D. Apple Maps is ...

I guess the correction won't happen for years no matter what ... police ought to open a full time post there before somebody actually dies.

Then Tim Cook can offer another apology letter, : "Please dear customer RIP, were sorry but please keep using our map system and sending us corrections. Although we ignore them completely and don't really care about improving our systems nor giving you back a working Map application at the moment, it will give you a sense of comfort by knowing that you didn't die in vain and it will be a legacy when we incorporate the correction by the release of iOS 137 in the next century."

It's embarrassing that apple still have no solution, they should just bite the bullet and make a new deal with google to get the proper maps back until they have spend a few years developing their own ****. Without realizing how much I used maps ( read google maps ) until now where I can't do it properly, it has become one of the reasons why I am holding off upgrading to iPhone 5 an maybe 5s and is looking elsewhere.

Nice one, I love the bolded parts HAHAHA. But it's actually reality. Most people haven't see any improvements in their area even though they reported the same correction numerous times. That says a lot about Apple's efforts to correct the maps problem despite Tim's apology earlier on.

If you would read the articles on our hosts opening page you would see that the "error" that the Australian police were harping about on Apple Maps was caused by the Australian Government.

https://www.macrumors.com/2012/12/1...e-warning-issue-traced-to-official-gazetteer/

So if the government cannot keep track of where there towns are you cannot expect their maps to be accurate.

Full points for being an Apple apologist, zero points for reading comprehension.

Please re-read the front page article... that's not what it says at all. The location of the town was never incorrect.

This is where the logic of pulling poi's comes in as an issue with Apple.

The poi for the "town" doesn't even come up...even though if you drop a pin in the town, it shows the correct address with the town name even listed.

These 6 knuckleheads who drove off in the middle of nowhere must have obviously either typed in or asked Siri, "directions to Mildura" bringing up the incorrect (but partially correct as it is an "area' as stated in the article) poi.

If they had just given an address or asked for a poi in the actual town, it would bring them to the correct location.

While you can't try it now, I actually replicated the route given by the woman in the article (Adelaide to Mildura)....If you could see the routes that came up, where they were going and the mistakes along the way, she had to be pretty dense to go much further than the first turn taking her off the main road. :p

It's simply insulting that Apple would even call Apple maps, a map.

I live in New York City. What kind of map doesn't have a subway station on it? Yea... Apple maps. This is THE means of transportation around the city.

I mean come on. So tired of Apple's stupid little games with this. Correct information is a MAJOR reason why you buy a smartphone these days. Or should we now call it a dumbphone.

Apple... give it up. Put Google Maps back on the iphone. Jesus Christ on a cracker.

Which subway station is missing?

Calm down, have some dip...then Download hopstop. I'm not happy with Apple Maps but I'll be damned if Apple made a deal with the company that purposefully withheld turn by turn directions to millions of users as a leveraging point.

Turn around is fair play? Don't you think that Apple is withholding Google Maps from millions of users as a leveraging point (against Google?)

We're hostages to Apple's own power play...and it's a damn poor one, given the enormous bad publicity it generates.

You want to know what I have to say? Hell with Apple Maps! Hell with Maps! Columbus didn't need a map and us men don't need them either. :D

I'm almost wishing Maps would fail me miserably at this point...another two days of driving in unknown cities with no issues. Told me which routes had tolls (boy that helped since my wallet was in my bag), perfect directions to work, hotels, restaurants, airports/rental car locations...Houston and Dallas.

Why? Has Apple fixed its mapping app yet?

Has it opened it's API to let you select Google maps in third party apps instead?

Can you set Google maps as default?

Can you uninstall Apple's failed app and get some screen real estate back?

Yeah I want Apple to implement all the 4 points you said. Then it'll be great.:D

Google has created the Google Maps for iOS SDK, which allows developers to feature Google Maps in their applications rather than Apple Maps. Developers can do this in two ways. The first uses a URL scheme so developers can have their apps launch Google Maps to complete a search, show a map or Street View imagery, or view walking, driving and public transportation navigation easily. There are also API keys that allow developers to feature information like traffic navigation and general maps navigation.

The URL scheme still involves a quick switch to Safari, which looks and feels ****.

And I still can't set the contacts app to take me places in Google Maps rather than Apple Maps, or to allow me to send a location via MMS.

It's time for Apple to fix those things and bury Apple Maps once and for all.

I can read press releases too, but that doesn't actually answer any of the questions I asked.

Police: Google Maps Giving Dangerous Directions, Too

"Days after Australian police warn about Apple Maps, they lodge a similar complaint against Google.

Police in Colac, a town west of Melbourne, say Google Maps has created "a significant safety issue for tourists [and] locals" along the Great Ocean Road by suggesting they drive down a one-way road not built for heavy traffic, according to a police sergeant quoted by ABC News.

Tour buses using Wild Dog Road are in danger of being driven off the road, Sgt. Nick Buenen told ABC."

For Christ sake. You'd think the the world as ending by the way you're reacting. You don't like Apples maps and Google has just released theirs. If you don't like the way that Apple runs theircompany or their stores then move on to another platform. It's thatsimple.

No?

Question: Has it opened it's API to let you select Google maps in third party apps instead?

Answer: Google has created the Google Maps for iOS SDK, which allows developers to feature Google Maps in their applications rather than Apple Maps

Anyway, I am leaving here for good, I have responded to a lot of nitpicking, but I don't care any longer. This becomes ridiculous. People nitpicking about real estate in their folders? Really? The first question is not even worth being answered.

An update by cnet:

Update, 12:41 p.m. PT "A Google spokesperson said that Google Maps routes drivers onto Wild Dog Road only if the driver searches for a destination located on that road. For directions to other nearby locations, Google Maps routes drivers onto Forrest-Apollo Bay Road/Skenes Creek Road."

So the answer is no to my question about whether Apple had opened its API.

Apple hasn't done a thing...
