Thanks everyone for the discussion! I was able to track one down at an Apple store about 20 miles down the road, so I'll be picking it up there tonight to test it out and see if it's a keeper or not.
Great to hear let us know how you get on with it.

I imagine it’s mostly by design/because Apple stocks less of certain products, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the fact that it was recently leaked that the new SE will be dropping the old design/adding a notch has at least played a factor.

Which is wild to me because the 13 Mini is better in every way and even lighter. Unless you need lcd the home button is overrated.
Try explaining to an older person that their home button is "overrated" and that they don't need it.
Especially when they get set in their ways.

I offered to purchase him more expensive iPhones but he doesn't like any of them lol.

I was initially put off by the no home button thing. However, either my fingers or the water resistant button cover of my Otterbox defender case made the touch ID on my 1st gen (yeah I am a reluctant upgrader) useless.

After my beloved phone met its demise last month I bought a 13 mini--the facial ID feature is scary--it seems as soon as I click on the "power" button the phone unlocks and I am up and running. I still have a home buttoned older ipad and really can't say that I wish that the ipad had facial ID or that I miss the home button on my phone. You get used to it and it's fine.

I very well may be part of the "older person" age band that @davedvdy referred to (first year of mandatory Medi-Care coverage)--it might be good to explain folks that some of the new phones don't have the home button, but that's okay, the facial ID is easy/works consistently and that there is functionality that the home button has but can be assessed by other means.

If one isn't interested in some of the features that the 13 mini offers, but just wants a decent smartphone that operates in the iOS environment, the new SE is a very reasonable alternative. For an 128GB unlocked new iPhone, an SE retails for $479, the 13 mini $629. For many does the 13 mini have $150 more value than the SE? Perhaps not.

If it's any one like my Father, it's because it has a home button. He told me the lack of home button would be a dealbreaker for a new iPhone.

Home button is so superior to that stupid face ID. Also I like the bezels. They're a place to hold the phone. No stupid notch.

Apple effed up the iphone when it moved to the notch, got rid of touch ID and home button, and made the damn things so fat and heavy and big that you can't carry or hold them comfortably.

I bought an SE earlier this year and plan to move to it, gradually. Still using the 8 Plus, though. Really looking forward to smaller and lighter.

P.S. The SE Starlight w/ red leather case is beautiful. I don't give a rat's ash about these ridiculous new phones.

As.a musician who's fingers get warped, I can tell you Face ID is vastly superior in my situation hands down, though.
I still have to reregister fingers constantly with Touch ID on a back up device I have, as the system doesn't even recognize them after a week or so!

I doubt it’s demand I think it’s more of a supply issue where apple cut production last year and now we are seeing shortages for the se. I’m sure they’ll trickle production

Could it be related to the zero covid policy of the originating country? As long as they have the draconian and unrealistic policy, any shutdown of in any part of the fabrication/production/assembly/shipping process will slam the door on product availability on the consumer side.

Already explained above.

Don't see anything in previous posts that isn't speculation or guesses about delays. Have yet to see any reputable sources indicate that UPS delays are due to lack of capacity, other than COVID issues.
