How much can this be improved with software updates?

He was also only comparing portrait mode (with beta software) between the two phones.

Lol the iPhone fornt camera has always been crap regardless of model for the most part...

The 7 was crap compared to the Pixel 1, not sure why you were expecting the X to be that much better? It has the same module as the 8, and that wasnt any better...I'm inclined the 7,8 and X all have the same front facing camera module.

Only change with the X at least in comparison to the 8 is just that the True Depth camera system works in conjunction with the front facing camera for animojis and portrait mode.

I watched the video - the Pixel 2 is more crisp and defined which looks cool but is not how a DSLR works, I would say the X looks a lot less processed and more "natural" in terms of how DSLR cameras and lenses work. Which one you prefer is subjective.

I think you guys need to click on the pictures to see what OP is talking about. While I can see the coloration differences in like his black shirt and skin tones being likely a little more realistic in the Pixel pics, you do not get the true difference until you actually click to open them and view side by side at a larger frame. Look at his hair and face as an example to see the detail lost from the Pixel to the Iphone. He isnt crazy with his claim that the Pixel appears to be better. . .. atleast from these pics

The only one that looks better on the Pixel is the first one and it doesn't even look like he succeeded in using portrait mode on the X in that shot, so I'm inclined to dismiss it as user error. The rest of the shots look significantly better and more natural on the X.

This thread is nonsense. The pictures are taken using the front facing camera and aren't full resolution. I also suspect some editing/filters as some of the pictures look a little washed out. Oh yeah, and all 6 pictures are somewhat blurry -- no detail.

The Pixel is definitely a sharper image overall, but color wise the iPhone looks more natural. Probably has to do with Pixel using AI to process the portrait mode.

I saw MKBHD share these photos within his review. You should really watch the youtube video (in 4K if possible) to truly appreciate the photos. After seeing them there, they looks completely fuzzy/blurry in how they're attached to this thread.

Edit: In terms of the title for this thread - the front camera quality is far from "crap". These were examples of using portrait mode on the front facing camera.

Yea they're screenshots from the video so they're not actual resolution but you can still see the differences.

Full video here:

The camera portion is at 4:15

For some reason, they're completely blurry in how they show up in this thread though. Definitely should watch on the video if possible.

The Pixel 2 does a better job at front facing portrait, especially when it comes to isolating the subject from the background. A lot of blurring occurs around the edges & hair on the iPhone.

Also, your thread title is highly misleading.

bare in mind he's using portrait lightening which is still in beta..far from the finished product.

If you think the shading is off on the X in the very first example, look at the skin tone of the Pixel 2. It's completely unnatural. Way over exposed? I guess it was trying to compensate for the tough lighting condition and it failed miserably.
