Before the Apple Watch, the Galaxy Gear had icons like this.

Now it looks like this.

Coincidence?

Coincidence?
Probably not a coincidence; Apple probably mimicked the Gear S icons. (All the other smart watches preceded Apple, some by years, so it is more likely that Apple copied others than the others copied Apple.)

The Weather app icon is the best, they literally just flipped it over.
You do realize that the AW weather icon is also similar to the Gear S, right? And the icons on the AW (and Samsung devices) look like smartphone icons we have seen for the past few years. If anything, Apple copied Samsung.

I see where you are going with this OP, no, Samsung did not copy Apple, icons exist on Android, usually the same icons are used by the companies for both Android/iOS.

iOS / Android have neen copying each other for years now.

Its hardware design people question when it comes to samsung copying apple...

Did someone forget about the Samsung Gear S, which also predates the Apple Watch?

Compare this, or the icons from Gear 2 to this mess (let's be honest if Samsung came up with this, they would have been ridiculed):

I know this is an Apple forum and all and people love to show how Apple innovates and is always copied, but Apple did not invent circular icons. Samsung Gear and Gear S watches were square in nature, and square icons works work. Samsung Gear S is circular, as such circular icons are more suitable.

If we are going to be nitpicking icons, that green phone icon from Apple Watch is a direct copy of the Samsung Gear S one.

The Apple Watch icons are all copied from iOS, and first appeared in iOS 7 in June of 2013.

If we are going to be nitpicking icons, that green phone icon from Apple Watch is a direct copy of the of the original iPhone from January 2007.

Actually, it's more like the iPod nano that was release in 2012.

Oh and it seems as the the Nike plus icon was completely copied over, as well.

Whomever is claiming apple copied Samsung completely deranged.

It shouldn't be any surprise that Samsung copies Apple. Just look at their new phone announcements. The S6 Edge+. They add the naming of "plus" just like Apple did last year.

It seems to work well for them. I bet the S6 Edge Plus will be their best selling phone yet.

I am wondering why they haven't shamelessly ripped off the digital crown. That's really what they are missing, besides good software and material design and product design and UI design.

They can't copy everything on day one.
The crown innovation will come on next years version.

Knowing Samsung it will only be 6 months from now. (Which I guess is technically next year) They will call it the "Digi Crown". And they will also add "Pressure Touch" or "Force Press".
Hahaha.
I believe they trademarked touch force.

Coincidence?

Circular icons make a lot more sense on a circular watch, than they do on a square one.

I'd say that the Samsung device shown reminds me more of the LG Urbane UI:

If we're nitpicking icons, Apple used that green phone icon after Skype and others did:

A Nike Plus icon is a Nike Plus icon. It's not going to change much.

I am wondering why they haven't shamelessly ripped off the digital crown.

Samsung patented a digital crown long before the Apple Watch... or even the iPhone... came out.

Yeah, cell phones have always had a green phone button for calling. Go find any cell phone from the 90's and it has a green phone button for answering and a red phone button for hanging up. That's why it's a stupid example.

Have to disagree. It's jarring to look at and navigation is an even worse experience. Can't explain it but visually and navigationally the icon constellation on the Apple Watch feels right.
