That's miniUSB, not microUSB. MicroUSB plugs are about the same size, but much thinner.

Your right, I forgot these have chips in them which im guessing can be updated?

There is active circuitry inside the connector to re-map pin functionality, but as far as I can tell from the connector specification, it wouldn't be able to add new functionality to the same cable.

Seriously, the oldest plug/socket combo in existence (thing biology) doesn't have a specific way it has to go in. If this was really revolutionary it'd be just as small, do just as much, but be "round" so it could fit in any way. Or maybe I'm just trying to stretch the innuendo here.
