What is so impressive about this cameras spec?
Have you guys been living under a rock for the last couple of years?

umm, this camera will deliver 4k, with very flexible storage, lenses, and upgrades (the sensor itself will be upgradeable as technology improves!), for....

$17,500!

yes, without lenses, but still. that is insanely cheap compared to the big boys.

That is an entire new standard which won't be consumer-ready til 2025...
So? That was not the point, on the first page many was going "wow nice specs", and well, it is not any extraordinary specs on that camera.

Also:

"While Nagamitsu Endo, NHK Enterprises America producer, co-productions, says the system isn’t expected to be ready for consumer deployment until 2025 it already has caught the eye of the industry’s leading HD proponents."

You don't know what's impressive about the Red camera, and you think other people having been living under a rock? I guess you wouldn't find a production care engineered kill a hi-end Porchse selling for the price of a base Honda Accord impressive either because in 20 or 30 years we'll all have self-driving, hover cars... maybe.

Well I know it is all the rage at dvxuser. I have been a forum member there for quite a few years. It is very real but honestly a few years away from mass production. Though I think a few will start showing up in 07. As for the P2 cards from Panny. They are amazing. No more having to buy tapes, reusable, and they are going to scale higher and higher in size as technology improves. Short term cost in high but the savings are there. Complete digital workflow for the end user. FINALLY!!!

P2 is an awesome leap in the right direction...but it is soo expensive for high-end consumers and indy film makers. If they dropped the price on their proprietary casing, more people would jump on it, since its only 4 (I think) SD memory cards in there.

My school is looking to get a few hvx200's over summer and I'll be using them by next winter :D

the p2 card also has a chip in it that deciphers the info as sent from the camera. it's not merely 4 sd cards. that said, i think we'd all agree that the price needs to drop!!

i have one 4 gb p2 for my hvx right now.... hopefully can pick up another one soon.

The MacBreak video podcast (you can find it in iTune or from http://twit.tv/ (This Week In Tech) just showed this being displayed at NAB. It's not "done" but they talked about some of what it's supposed to be and how half of the pundits think it will never fly and the other half are investing in it to get the first shot at it when it is done.

For some reason I think the on-board RAID 0 configuration and top flight SD cards that can read/write at up to 640 Mbps must survive at least 100,00 read/writes adds more to the cost of P2 than the "proprietary casing" which is PCMCIA form factor. ;)

I saw their booth at NAB and, at least for now, it's vaporware. They had nothing to show except marketing promises. That doesn't mean they'll never sell it or that it won't work. But it's kind of annoying that they keep this PR campaign going without a product.

Wow, how bout that?

I'm glad you revived the thread, I forgot completely about this thing. I'm eager to see where it goes.

Is that camera in their 3-d renders really that small? Or is it just the form a handycam with the size of high-end camera.

Because we at our "school" may be purchasing a high-end camera, but also for street interviews, and I can tell you, people will only take you seriously when you have a "big camera" (XL1 and up)

The render is just the body. No lens, no storage, no viewfinder, no shoulder mount, no battery.

Sorry to bump this insanely old thread, but with everything RED has done so far, it's quite comical to look at old threads like this and laugh at the naysayers. :p

Man who would have guessed back in 2006 that 5 years later Ridley Scott would be shooting "Aliens" (ok "Promethius"), Fincher the "Social Network" and "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", Peter Jackson "The Hobbit" on RED cameras.
