That's true, but if you know anything about voice processing and DSP, it's not far-fetched that they use a special chip in the new iPhone. The current voice control apps on the 2G and 3G have been unusable for me, so hopefully the 3GS implementation is much stronger.

I was able to find this link mentioning it on John Gruber's site: http://daringfireball.net/linked/2009/06/17/3g-s-hardware-thurrott

I find that the voice control apps on my 3G work extremely well, so I don't know why you would consider them "unusable."

LOL....I don't exactly take this site as the definitive point of facts about anything concerning Mac. Seems most of this stuff is just made up bull in hopes that someone believes it. :D

This from daringfireball:

iPhone 3G S Hardware Features ★
Paul Thurrott:

Amazingly, several software features Apple showed off yesterday will arbitrarily not be made available to other iPhone users. These include Voice Control and Compass. What??

The compass app is based on a hardware magnetometer, and my somewhat-informed understanding of Voice Control is that it uses new digital signal processing hardware. Thurrott didn’t complain about it, but the same goes for shooting video, by the way: video is a hardware feature of the 3G S camera, they’re not just snapping 30 frames per second from a still camera and using the CPU to stitch them together into video files.

?

Do you have to slide unlock to make a call?
That has been the bummer when driving.

tried it 5 times got it right 0

tried it silly mono (dod gy ro bot imp res sion voice) worked every time!!

tried normal voice again, and never worked again

im no talkin like a divvy to a phone..... Again

I just figured out you can't do that the semi-hard way. Tried to dial two different numbers when I said "play Poker Face." OK, so I tried "Play Fall Out Boy." Nothing. "Play Sting." The Lady Antebellum album comes up.

OK, so VC isn't perfect. But it did work when I used it to call someone last night. Gives the Apple engineers work to do.

You're doing it wrong.

It's 'Play' + 'Artist/Album/Playlist' + 'Name'. So 'Play Artist Fall Out Boy' will work. 'Play Fall Out Boy' will not.

"Play artist Lady Gaga." ----> "Playing artist Sia."

Not 10/10 for me! I don't know, it's kind of a gimmick. I think it's easier to just open the iPod app and find the song I want to play, create a Genius playlist, shuffle, etc.

It's worked great for me so far, but you do need to be sure to enunciate clearly. If you're slurring your words at all it'll have more trouble.

Right, which is why for everyday use, just sitting down somewhere listening to music or something, I would never use it. It's easier for me to use the app and just touch whatever I want to play. That being said, I will most definitely use it in my car for hands-free use of my iPhone.

yup same here

being a motorcycle rider has made me even more aware of this, even when in my car, and i think this should be handled the same way as drinking and driving personally

I somewhat agree, I think making calls is ok, especially if using speaker and you have two hands on the wheel, but I'm 18 and think that texting and driving is so ridiculously DUMB.
