I was ready to run out and get one, but honestly I expected more. More current technology (A6) or at least a lower price for yesterday's technology.

I do love responses like this. You've played right into Apple's marketing game. WHAT, NO A6!?!? A proprietary chip made by Apple, which nobody truly knows if it is even better. With as many iPad 1, 2, and 3, and iPhone 4, 4S, and 5 out there, game and app designers are designing for every chip, so to have an A6 is really insignificant. Are you really using your iPad to render video, or do hard core gaming? No, you're using it as a video player, and a remote control for your TV, and to see who's winked at you on Match.com. An A5, A4, or otherwise are all 100% acceptable for an iPad. An A6 won't get your message to your Match.com lady any faster than an A5, sorry.

Hmmm, there are some posted benchmarks showing that the A6 is better... didn't Apple say it was 2x as fast as the previous one?

And I disagree with the logic that you presented.... I have seen it for years, and it is NEVER valid. Faster chips are simply.....FASTER. If not in one application, then certainly in another. And if not now, then certainly next year, assuming I have the same device.

I did not see huge differences so far in my 4th gen compared to my 3rd gen, but that does not mean I should not want one to future proof the device for a bit.

"What do you think the mini runs? Apps developed specifically for the mini?"

Um yes, basically.

They were developed specifically for the ipad, which the mini is just a smaller version of.

And as far as I can tell, scaling apps DOWN from an ipad to an ipad mini is a lot better than scaling apps UP from a phone to a tablet.

Its interesting to see on this board - the posts claiming the iPad mini is the greatest iPad ever to the mini being the downfall of Apple.

Always heated discussions among Apple fans!:D

Doesn't really matter if it is the greatest thing ever or the most colossal piece of crap ever invented, they still sold out of them in one weekend. I got "one of the last ones" at my apple store Sunday afternoon, and could hardly squeeze myself into the store to get it!

More like heated discussions between Apple fans and android fans who navigate over on their Nexus 7's with an inferiority complex.

It makes them feel better by trying to discredit every aspect of the Mini to make them feel happy about having a Nexus 7.

Despite this being an Apple-centric site, some posts here are from people who are in no way fans of Apple, as you may have guessed. :)

Anyway this Apple fan likes the iPad mini and 4th gen equally well, although for different purposes.

Yeah, like Apple folks take the high road on tech discussions.

Like it or not, most people that get accused of trolls aren't actually super secret spies trying to discredit anything. Theyre simply normal people who love their Apple products but feel that blindly deflecting every negative aspect of a problem is plain stupid.

This forum is unbelievable for the amount of fanboys.

Anytime you criticize something Apple there's always the same fools coming in attacking you, accusing you of being a troll, etc. In other words, this place is full of delusional people who have emotional responses to anything Apple. There's very little objectivity.

But there are enough interesting people on here that I'm interesting in posting.

I don't give a crap in the end about Apple. I care about myself and having the best tools for the job. I like Apple and their products, but if another company came out with something better, I could care less... I'd jump over there and use it.

I think what you have seen here with the Mini is a huge, massive flood of people on the forums complaining about the screen being poor on the Mini. It's overwhelming how many people fall into this camp:

"Love the design, hate the screen, took it back". Denying that the Mini screen is poor is delusional. It's hard to believe that anyone with average eyesight wouldn't notice. All of Apple's iDevices are pretty much Retina across the board.

You then have a group of people who say they like or love the Mini. I wonder for how long until the hype dies down.

I'm very frustrated because part of our business rests on Apple. I think they made a very big mistake releasing this Mini and I will be my life that the return rates will be sky high and sustained sell through crap.

We shall see in the next few months what happens on the market.

While there are some Apple owners complaining about the mini not meeting their high standards, as is their right, go through the more "troll-ish" threads, and see how many android owners (and usually Nexus 7 owners) are posting.

See how much OTT stuff they are posting with wildly exaggerated complaints about things like the display (that they saw when looking at the mini in store).

There are a number of them, and they are in a lot of threads, posting them same thing over and over.

Everyone can have an opinion, but some people on here just have a wild one based on resentment and the joy of stirring up reactions.

Show us your data. I don't see this here at all. I see a lot of Apple users and long-time members up in arms over the iPad Mini screen. I'm also a long-time Apple users and have a ton of Apple products.

I HATE the Mini's screen. It's terrible and I'm left scratching my head why on earth Apple would do this. I know why, because Cook is in charge and he wants to goose business for the holiday season... in addition to having all iPad 2 Apps work on the Mini.

But the product itself is just idiotic. It needs its own Retina screen and unique UIs.

IMO, Apps are overrated.

I got a 16GB Mini so I've been clearing out room in order to optimize my space and one thing I discovered was how many apps I DONT use. Unplayed games are in everyones library but things like tech apps (Ars, Engadget), News, Weather, Stores etc are no longer important since the websites are now optimized for tablets.

I strongly prefer iOS so its nice to know such a huge app library exists in our ecosystem but in the end then claiming "billions of apps" or "tablet optimized" is becoming overrated and IF a platform has the essentials (Netflix, Kindle, Instapaper etc) then for AVERAGE users then the rest is all fluff.

Agreed.

It always cracks me up when apple talks about their 398753953049580345038354084038 apps :p Most of them are complete trash and the essentials for either platform are their and built for tablets.

People on either side who regurgitate what the manufacturers tell them about "my apps are better" are complete tools.

These are people who are still "euphorically" high from their mini purchase. Apple people are very opinionated but the high will go away for many in a few days. It sure did for me.

I hope my high never goes away. I usually regret my purchases soon after I buy them. I did for my iPad 2 and returned it the next day.

My iPad mini however, I use it more than my actual computer.

Show us your data.

Are you incapable of reading the stream of posts and threads bewailing the Mini as a potential cause of the downfall of Western civilisation?

It isn't hard, just takes some spare time and the ability to read through all the threads...

I have been reading through these threads and I don't see that there are many "Android fanboys/trolls" posting the negative reviews. I see a majority of people posting that they love the design, hate the screen and are taking it back, even upselling to the iPad 4.

if its the downfall of apple it sure is hard to find one! Especially white! I got lucky and preordered mine but you can't find them within 300 miles of my place!

Finally got around to setting up my Mini 32GB wifi. Have been using all previous generations of iPad and currently awaiting the 4 with LTE. Fully expected to return it or sell it after hearing all the negative views but had to have one to see for myself.

It's a keeper!

Planning on using it primarily for email, books, net surfing and checking my calendar. For such basic usage it is the perfect format. For more elaborate work such as taking notes during meetings, reading comic books, etc. will continue use the full size iPad.

There are two kinds of people here - People who just bought the mini and people who bought the iPad 3/4 and wish they had bought the mini :D

I HATE the Mini's screen. It's terrible and I'm left scratching my head why on earth Apple would do this.

As I see it, Apple had two other choices. (1) Don't release a smaller iPad, and just stick with 9.7. (2) Make a retina mini, for which they will have to charge, oh, I don't know, a starting price of $429? In any case, it will have to be a lot more expensive than $329.

In case of (1) people would be berating Apple for being behind the times and leaving the small tablet market to Google and Amazon. In case of (2), people would be berating Apple for charging too much.

In other words, whatever Apple does, somebody would complain.

It's really just people working very hard to make themselves feel better that they can't afford the cost, or bought a competing piece of garbage a few months back. It's Apple's best product in a long, long time. Think about it: what possible reason would a hater post about a product he doesn't want or like, other than the above.

No.

Apple is a technology company. They work to develop products that solve problems, and they themselves have to solve problems to make those devices. I'm also in the tech industry and excuses get you nowhere. It's up to us to design and engineer great products for people.

In other words, stop making excuses for Apple. Nobody would have thought you could cram so many pixels into a 9.7" screen, especially one that runs on a battery! But they did it with the iPad 3. And they'll do it on the Mini as well.

This is just a dumb move: they compromised way, way to much and are offering a substandard product that makes very little sense given the iDevice line up they have where ALL of it should be Retina by now.

Please don't make excuses for them, you don't have to do that. Trust me. They can do much better than this my friend.

You, like so many others, oversimplify everything. I have over $50,000 worth of computer equipment sitting in my office. Most of it is Apple. I've got 2 iPad Minis. I think they are complete garbage because the screen is terrible.

So there. I'm not an Apple hater. The product actually sucks. Stop being delusional and accept reality that maybe, just maybe, the iPad Mini is a bad product or, even if you don't accept that, accept that people have valid criticism without stupid hater labels, etc.

And why do people complain? Why do you praise? Why do you post here? This is an Internet discussion forum, deal with it.

In my case, I'm frustrated because I make money from Apple. This product is not good for my business. I'm interested in talking to other, "mature" people about this to help my thinking in navigating decisions we have to make moving forward. I also read this forum to gauge real world users and their reaction.

It's all valid.

I'm actually considering a Nexus 7 when the 32GB/3G model comes out - seems much closer to what I think the price point should be.

While I would never consider a Google device, I did seriously consider the B&N Nook HD and the Kindle Fire HD. I've got a Kindle (bog standard) which is a wonderful device, I love it and even though I bought the new mini, I'm not giving up my Kindle.

What I think is interesting is when people talk about price, especially as it relates to the cheaper price of the Google/Amazon/B&N devices. The thing that most interests me is people's assumption that the price they pay day 1 is the price of the product. You do realise that they make no profit on this product at day one? Jeff Bezos (CEO, Amazon) has even admitted this. That's why those products are so much cheaper (build materials and quality aside).

So, if that's the case, and there's no reason to doubt this, how do these companies stay in business if they make no money selling products to you and me?

I'm not implying you don't know, but it's like when people talk about free television, all the while succumbing to every single advertisement they view, while enjoying this "free" medium. There is no free, there is no such thing as a capitalist company which earns no profit and yet stays in business. They make their money, they just extract it from your pocket post-purchase in the most insidious ways.

There exist people who escape this trap and buy the cheaper products and never pay the post-purchase profit to the manufacturer, perhaps some even visit this forum, but do not for a moment assume you have outfoxed these clever corporations. They will get their profit one way or another, don't be fooled by the up-front sticker price, it's a farce.
