The 180's were Quattro's too, the 150's were FWD. ;)

Just double checked and they did 2wd and quattro versions of the 180BHP. Exhausts are indeed a tell-tale sign (2 for the quattro), as are weeny 16" rims that came with the stock 150bhp model.

Incredibly similar when put like that. The curves of the porsche and lights of the focus are pretty much identical.

You really should send that pic to a motoring magazine. Picture = 1000 words and all that.

YES! The new TT looks more like a man's car at least, the old one was like a bubble car and was girly. This is much nicer, it looks leaner, meaner and more aerodynamic.

Well done Audi!! It actually looks nice now.

It may stop hair dressers buying them now :p

Now that's got me thinking... was that released after the 150PS??? I thought that the 150PS model was the first TT introduced with FWD as a cheap way onto the TT ladder, next time I see my ex (she works for Audi UK) I'll see what the deal was with that.

Talking of TT's, the 3.2 was cracking, we had one for a weekend whilst she was waiting on the A8 TTDi. Vastly superior to the Turbo models, DSG too. :D

Just a quick check... reveals that a 180 FWD TT was indeed available in 2000  so apologies to the 'Spider and AIB, ;)

They must have kept that option well hidden in the brochure... (my TT one doesn't mention it) think you did right to dump that guy 'Spider, he didn't always want to go dutch by the way did he??? heheh.

.

I'm not sure but I think the 150 may have been brought in afterwards. I have a feeling at launch, it was available as 180BHP 2wd and 225 Quattro, but it was so long ago I'm not sure.

Its a very nice looking car, but the Original TT still looks stunning and how old is it again?? easily the best aging car of this generation of not the best aging car ever...

I think the DB7 aged better.

The original TT (I am on my SECOND now) came out in late 1999... I bought my first in February 2000 (a black one) and traded it in for my second in April 2002 (a silver one)... both 4-cyl manual quattros (which aren't even an option now — if you want quattro or manual, you have to get the 6-cyl model). The original TT also won several design awards, including Design of the Year from International Design magazine.

The new TT ain't gonna win any such awards. It's clearly an inferior product, the result of the original Freeman Thomas design being altered by whoever replaced him when he left VW/Audi for DaimlerChrysler. The original looked like something from the 1930s; the new one is clearly a car of the 2000s.

My initial impression of the car is not very good, but I'll reserve complete judgement until I see one in person. I do like the interior.

My girlfriend is going to be very disappointed. She was looking at getting a TT soon, and I don't know if she's going to like this new model very much.

It's insane how much bartelby's mockup looks like the new TT design! It inspired me to make a quick 'n dirty little animation. The similarity becomes even more apparent:

Audi stopped being cool

As the title suggests Audid stopped being cool when they moved away form the boxier shaped cars of the early 90's and 80'

case in point the Audi 90 quattro (my favourtie model) woth a body kit and a pant job could look like this

ok, ok, that's an IMSA car, but they gone away form that classic european 4door saloon look which was and still is so cool

Looks a little Porsche inspired.

A "little"? ;)

It looks like they've cut the front 1/3 of a focus and welded it to the back 2/3s of a Porsche

Haha, Ford........a bit harsh.

I do like the side panels a lot more. The previous model looked a bit too "bubble-ish".......too rounded. It didn't look aggressive enough for me. If I buy a sports car, it better not look like it has mumps. Not saying that the original TT model was ugly, but it did look like an elongated Beetle in a way.

Not True, Audi still sell the 1.8 T Quattro 4 Cyl 6 speed manual

It may have won design awards but they are a matter of taste, the original TT look like a bubbled / elongated beatle which isn't the best platform to start designing a car. The new one looks meaner like it could now stand up against some of the other coupe' and not look ... well.... girly and wimpish

You made a pretty brought statement there, all Audi TT's are 1.8T or 3.2 V6. So yes they still make a 6 Speed. Here are the configurations as far as I know here in the US.

1.8T 180HP front wheel drive -manual, automatic

1.8T 180HP quattro -manual, automatic

1.8T 225HP quattro -manual (automatic not an option)

3.2 V6 250HP DSG only in the US (launch control disabled)

I think the manual were dropped in the later model years of the front wheel drive.

One thing not to forget about the first version TT is that it went from design study pretty much straight to production (only minor changes were made). Here are a few pictures for comparison of the new and old.

VW did this same thing with their lineup too (yes I know, VW owns Audi)...although the Passats actually look better with the new models I think. The new Jettas are hideous (except for the R-GT version). The GTI's are nice....all except for the front.
