Something like this debuted years ago for a ‘Kickstarter project’ and it totally failed. Consumers aren’t interested in a purchase with this type of accessory, simply because it’s ugly, not really practical and totally out of price range at $300.00.

I can appreciate the concept of what it’s trying to execute, but the price point is just way out of line.
Yeah, five years ago ... called CMRA. A total bust.

This is the same product. The kickstarter product was delayed for many years but eventually they actually shipped. That’s how I got mine. In its current design it is pretty much unusable. I might go track mine down to test with the new software but it still won’t be usable as a day to day product.

Wow... it actually shipped?!

I was in the small group that got the NuDock WATCH/iPhone power station lamp before it went belly-up ... and it still works after five years!

That's the childhood dream isn't it? ?

Honestly though I'm not a fan of video calls, text me first, call me if it's an emergency, video call me never (alright, only after we have agreed on a video call). I can't really think of a scenario where a video call over my Apple Watch would be necessary or even "nice to have".

P.S. the band is ugly and looks like it would be uncomfortable especially when you wear long sleeves
So.. this then?

This looks so ridiculous and honestly, someone walking around video calling on their watch deserves to run into a pole face forward. I hope we never have video calling on smart watches.

They've talked about this for years. So silly. No one wants to hold their watch up like that. Folks would just use their iPhone. This company will be gone in months.

Yeah, it's like those fools at Apple that thought people would want to use their watches to make phone calls instead of their iPhone so included cellular capabilities on the AW ?

Why… why would you want to make a video call from your wrist?
When I go running, I never take my phone, just my watch. Which is great, and I rarely if ever miss my phone since I can make calls/listen to music from my phone.
BUT...
On more than one occasion, I've been out on a run, and come across a man riding up and down the street in a go cart, dressed as Mario, with the go cart painted exactly like one from MarioKart, and I DESPERATELY need a photo of that.
It's *probably* not worth $300, but i dunno... this is tempting. Plus if I ever get hit by a car or something and wanna get the license plate, I guess...

So, initially I would think the same way. However, I have a kid in college who Facetimes me at least once a day. For some reason she always manages to catch me when my phone is sitting on my desk and I am somewhere else in the house. In that situation I will answer the FT on my watch and chat audio only. Having video on the watch would be pretty cool. Not $299-and-dead-after-the-next-upgrade cool, but cool.

Exactly.

At least with a phone you can set it down and prop it up on something.

Oh... and both parties have to use the WristCam app. Yikes.

Is anyone taking bets on how long this product (or company) will be around?

?
I get uncomfortable just holding my wrist in a position to do a few interactions on my watch. Anything more than checking the time or reading a notification is too long for me.

Holding your wrist up to make a video call feels awkward, and it makes your arm tired. I don’t even like using the watch for calls, because I have to hold it close to my ear to hear it well - especially in loud environments.
I’m not sure about this. The watch is already on your wrist. How do you FaceTime on your phone? Do you not hold the device up or are you always sitting it down? If you are sitting it down how are you talking? On speaker? How’s that work in loud environments?

The only things that I can see as a negative here are the bulk of the band and it’s not FaceTime.

Really what is the use case of this? I hate when people randomly want to see my face via FaceTime on my iPhone… on my wrist would simply be too much.

I’ve been surprised for years that the AW doesn’t do video calls. Hope Apple adds it soon.

To those complaining about holding your wrist up: it’s not for a family reunion. Could be great as a quick 10-30 second check-in.

To those talking about privacy: it’s one of many trade-offs we will continue to make for progress with technology. Back in the day, phones with camera/recording capability probably had certain people/watchdogs talking.

Also, with AR glasses in the next decade and other tech becoming more prominent, we’ll just need more safeguards in place, as opposed to abandoning new innovations.

I think it's neat and overdue. In time, it will become normal. I can think of scenes where a cam on/in/around a watch could be very vital like medical, crime etc...

Privacy issues with a hidden camera in places like bathrooms

It’s not hidden. It’s plain as day in big bulky form. And has a green flashing light. You’re other points certainly do apply though. This really doesn’t solve a problem.

The reason is, it just totally invades on privacy and would open up Apple to backlash due to ‘misuse’,

You mean like AirTags? Yeah Apple would never do something like that! 😂

Huh..? The watch has a smaller speaker and it’s harder to hear…………….

So does holding up your phone 🤷🏼‍♂️ That's why you simply rest your arm/wrist on something during the video call.
Omg! Why didn’t I think of that!? I can’t wait to buy one of these! Phones with front facing cameras are soooooo 2012.

Apparently you didn't ;) "My arm would get tired" simply doesn't make sense as a reason to prefer iPhone video calls over AW video calls. I imagine the main reason people would prefer the iPhone is obvious: larger screen (and better audio if you're simply using the device's speakers).

Great concept... horrible hardware issue: (bands).

Got one of the original models, but ever since then, it is been a fight between Wristcam and the availability of larger bands for people with thicker, thicker wrists. I even had a pseudo-working larger band created by a very tech-savvy lad, but the materials were irritating (allergic) to the skin.

I've been testing the latest video talk feature since it came out (as a beta), but after 20 minutes, the unit starts to dig in the flesh, and If I don't wait for the skin blemish to dry, it is twice the pain on the next camera test (No, it is very tight, so anything wedged-in to help with the pain barely fits in between the Wristcam and flesh) ಠ_ಠ
