I'd put it right below the lower volume button.
But obviously on the other side of the phone where it is now just lower.
That would not be close to where my thumb goes with my 6 Plus. There's plenty of room and it would make life so much easier.
Nice try making it sound like its impossible to locate it on a better position than it is now though:D Of Course Apple is always right, we are just holding it wrong:D

I don't doubt that the location for the power button you chose is better for you. But I know for a fact that it is not a better location for everyone. Proof: me!

I find it amusing that you thought that Apple didn't think much about the location of the power button when they placed it where is. If anything, they probably spend what a normal company would consider to be an obscene amount of resource reviewing the location of the power button. They are what they today because of that.

I agree on the lower position but raising it a little bit so it's across the silent switch should still be quite accessible even single-handed on both the 6/6+. I've tried it and it's fine considering I have baby hands.

Another solution would be to move the volume buttons and keep the power button right where it is.
On a 6 moving the volume buttons lower likely wouldn't work as people generally have fingers there already when holding the phone. These things can be more likely on a 6 Plus.

As far as moving the power button a bit higher, that can potentially work although trying it on a 6, without really shifting my normal hold, I can access the button as it is now with just fully extending my thumb, while if it was higher I'd likely need to shift my grip somewhat (and I have fairly typical sized hands, certainly not on the smaller side). That's not to say it's really inconvenient or anything like that, but certainly a bit more of a deliberate action basically than just extending the finger and nothing else. It would likely be even worse on the 6 Plus. Although as always that also depends on how people hold their phone too, as not everyone really does it the same way necessarily.

I know, me and everyone else with the button placement issue are all crazy.
It's perfect, Apple always makes the best choices for us. How dare I to question anything?:D
Maybe I'm the only human that grabs objects with their index and thumb fingers parallel.

I wouldn't go that extreme either. The way I see it, no matter where Apple put the power button, there is always a number of people who prefer it moved. Don't you agree?

The question is, what is the best trade-off in term of location? That, it would be reasonable to assume that a company like Apple would spend a lot of time considering. But you said that you thought they place the power button there without much thought, which I doubt is the case.

I wouldn't be surprise that they had prototypes with variation of locations for buttons. In the end they had to pick one. I am sure they had their reasons. In this case, I agree with them. And no, I don't always agree with their design. For instance, I hated the sharp edges of their iPhone 4 (you can search for my previous posts). I find the rounded edges of the 6 much more comfortable.

The way I saw it is as if they didn't put much RD and testing into it.
Cause every day I keep hitting the volume button while I try to press the lock button. Its only natural when you apply pressure with your index the thumb also pushes in.
Even if the put it higher I wouldn't mind but a little lower than the bottom volume button would be perfect for my 6 plus IMO.
They could have made better choices to avoid that IMO. Im glad you enjoy the placement and surprised you don't have this issue. You have all 5 of your fingers right?:D

No, I have 10 fingers :)

I have hit the power button by accident. I suspect that it happened to everyone. In the beginning, it happened more often, maybe 3 times a week. Now, probably once every couple of months. Therefore, it's not a big deal for me.

I have personally found that since I am left handed and my thumb doesn't rest naturally on the lock button (since I hold the phone in my left hand), I typically shy away from using the lock button all together on my 6 Plus.

This does cause more wear and tear on my home button though over time.

So yes I would agree that the power button placement is in fact a design defect for people who are left-handed. YMMV.

Also wanted to say that I'm a sales rep for a major wireless carrier and the GS6 devices that we sell do have the side power button placed a bit lower and I can personally say from experience that it is a nice general location for the button.

I am right handed, but half of the time I hold my phone with my left hand, so I can use my right hand on the screen. It's like if you are right handed, you hold your clipboard on your left hand so you can write with your right hand.

I'm huge on one handed use to be honest

I'd think the power button at the side instead of the top like iOS4 or 5 is a design failure. When we take a pic in landscape with the vol button on top serve as shutter, inadvertently our thumb positioned below may accidentally pressed the power button, hence turning it off.

Has anyone of you ever has similar experience?
I don't have that issue because I can remember where the button is and don't push it.... It's really NOT that hard.
