I was in the exact same situation as the OP.
Only qualified for a full upgrade in February.
I printed out the PDF and AT&T wouldnt do anything about it. They said I can only get one early upgrade per contract/24 months.
I said I can cancell for $120 and get the new iphone for $199.
They were willing to do that but I dont want to lose my number or unlimited data.
So I got stuck paying the full no commitment price but that is not with a 2 year contract.
So again in February of 2011 I will be ready for a full upgrade.
After that its not worth cancelling your contract cause its not $175 from now on, ETF is up to $325

I'm in exactly the same situation as the OP.

Personally, I'm printing 100 copies of that f****g PDF and bringing them with me to an AT&T store. I'm raising hell if I don't get the 399/499 pricing. I couldn't care less about my monthly bill (cheapest; paid always on time) because they should not have posted that Pricing Fact Sheet in the first place!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

It clearly states that all current iPhone users are eligible for at least an early upgrade. No mention of 'once in 18 months' rule whatsoever. I demand the 399/499 pricing!!!!!!!!!! You hear me, AT-effin-T!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Calm. Yourself. Have you even talked to your local AT&T store about it or are you just ranting based off of what you think you know?

I can't speak for PBF, but I HAVE spoken to my local ATT store, as well as to Apple, as well as to 1-800-ATT, and of course 1-800-APPLE ...

One ATT store said, "Don't worry, even though it says you are paying $699, you'll really pay $499."

Another ATT store said, "Sorry we don't set the prices, APPLE does." LOL

Apple said, "We don't set the prices, but my guess is that if you come in Thursday morning to pick up your phone, it'll really only cost you $499."

I emailed the PDF to an ATT rep (because she couldn't find it) and she said wait until the 20th and your status will probably change (it didn't).

Sadly enough, I am ok with paying $699 so long as my contract is not effected and I am able to get iPhone 5 for $299 ... but that doesn't look good either.

After reading all the problems with upgrade eligibility dates I decided to check my own :)

My wife and I are on a family plan (both with iphones). Her iphone is the primary line. Both of us upgraded to 3GS's on the day they launched last year.

I clicked on upgrade eligibility and my phone is apparently eligible for an upgrade and her's is not eligible until February of next year. How is it possible that we both upgraded our phones on the same exact date, both are iphones, and yet we have different dates of eligibility!?

We're pretty much screwed. Pay full price or wait for next iPhone.

Anyone else considering early termination and just starting a brand new line? Of course as mentioned above you'd lose unlimited data and your old phone number. I can't think of any other negative.

It's just so all around stupid and arbitrary, as Goldcard said there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to their system.

I just called AT&T about my family plan. They told me it's wrong on the web site, since only the main line could get $199/$299, and my second line was $599/$699. I can get it at $399/$499 no trouble, they told me. So if in doubt, just call AT&T, and they'll set you straight.

Nah not worth it. I cannot afford to lose my number or unlimited data. You might as well go with paying full price, you won't have to deal with this crap next year.

I went to ATT today for one last shot. I took two ATT marketing documents from their website and 3 other reliable internet sources--all stipulating that I should, in no uncertain terms, be getting the early upgrade price. Yada yada yada, 20 minutes later I walked out with nada. Truly a crock of sh**. If I had the same knowledge-base as these people in my job I'd be fired in a week.

The only hope left is that something magically different appears on the screen when I go pick up my reserved 32GB. I'll assume it won't, and will start looking for either another carrier to pick it up, or after owning each of the previous 3 iPhones, I'll start looking for the next best non-iPhone thing. Bummer.

Did you speak to the store manager? That's who made it happen for me last week.

I thought your contract had to end anytime in 2010 to be eligible for an upgrade. If you bought yours last June, then you're not eligible since your contract will end in 2011. I bought mine Jan 5 2009... too bad I didn't buy it in Dec.

That's not it. I got my first iPhone last June with the 3GS launch and I was eligible for full subsidized pricing of 299.

Bowlerman,

Do you know what the store manager did? My person WAS the store manager and appeared to be trying to help me, but the best she could come up with was to get me to wait until the next wave of 4's come out and do the add a line, eat the ETF, lose my unlimited data plan scheme.

Wow.

Sorry to hear that. Sure is a mysterious formula. They don't do what they say they will do.
