How do I do this?

Reboot the computer whilst holding down Cmd+S. keep holding till it you see an DOS/Terminal like interface then once its done loading a bunch of text type "/sbin/fsck -fy" excluding the quotes and press return. Once finished you'll get a volume OK (file system fine) or volume modified (iffy). At this point type "reboot".

Fix

I have the same prob (mainly in Finder) and have found a temporary fix, at least until the next software update

After running Activity Monitor and looking at "mds" (which controls spotlight) i saw that it was using ~100% CPU. This was not good, naturally

try disabling spotlight:

system preferences > spotlight > privacy > + > macintosh HD

this will pop that shady beach ball!!!

Calm the "F" down!!! My bad for the attitude. Wtf!?! Lol...relax.
More info:
Migration came from snow Os X but from an old MacBook (black). Same capacity HD on both drives. At this point I'm thinking it's the hard drive. I tried everything else mention here and still very sluggish.

Was Spotlight indexing your drive at the time by any chance?
