Yes, by not locking you door you made it easy for the thief, but you haven’t done anything wrong. The f*** of a thief shouldn’t just help himself to every opportunity.

So don’t be angry at yourself, be angry with that nasty little sh*t, and learn your lesson.

Agreed. I was going to say the same thing until you posted about your eerie childhood.

I know people here are essentially saying that you're also to blame for making it so easy for thieves to steal you stuff, but are you really "wrong"? You made a mistake, and unfortunately, you paid for it this time. Not really. If there's anything wrong, it's the people who do such things. Yes, you forgot to lock the door, but the large majority of the blame should go towards people in our society who would steal stuff that isn't even valuable from you just because they saw someone had made a mistake.

Look on the bright side. If you had locked your car you would have no TV and busted window!

Wow, I'd love to live where you grew up..it sounds like that movie, 'pleasantville'- 1998

My girlfriend's hometown is like that. No one locks doors, everyone knows eachother, during the summer they leave their doors wide open at night (well screen-door to keep animals out). Hell, at the bank, you don't even need to show them your card, they just know you. Her parents disposit cheques into her account without her card or without being there... God it's so weird!

That thought had occured to me when I calmed down. If that happened my mom would have probably cried. We don't have a lot of spare cash right now since we just bought a house.

[sarcasm]I know, maybe I should go steal from someone else so I can buy replacements for the things that got stolen.[/sarcasm]

Sorry man, that sucks big time. Take comfort in the fact that most people are decent. That hatred will rot away at you if you let it. I had all my possessions stolen at a time in my life when it couldn't have hurt more. I easily could and would have murdered over a bunch of "stuff." Looking back now (this was a good 12 years ago) its a good thing I don't have a "kill button" on my desk or I'd be stomping on it with glee even today. They could be reformed crackheads now, raising children for all I know, and teaching the community and all of a sudden they'd just keel over dead if I had my way.

Some basic tips from my life guide:

Don't live in a ghetto next to a crack house.
If you do, never leave the house even for 5 minutes.
When you do get robbed or killed try not to be too shocked. See #1.

I thought I was going to give some advice on not becoming jaded but now I just wanna go bash in some heads with a crowbar. I need therapy. Yeah uh.. where's the Mac Pro update? Damn.

"dont live in a ghetto next to a crack house."

Wow.. I wish I would have thought of that. Welll good thing I have 300000 grand in my back pocket so I can build a new house in the "good area of town".

Are 100s ok, or do you want 1000 dollar bills?

Most banks will let you deposit money into another persons account without any issue. Taking out is another matter.

I have to agree with mpw and Abstract. You did absolutely nothing wrong, and you should blame yourself. More than leaving out items of value, people are sometimes just randomly targeted because the thief happened to decide to rob them at that moment. I have a friend who had her car broken into to steal a roll of toilet paper, while CDs, stereo, and other valuables were left behind. I had another friend who had his car broken into three times to search for valuables that might have been out of sight - when another car that looked exactly like his, had a GPS, stereo, cell phone, and CDs in plain view was parked either next to, or one car down.

Being preyed upon sucks, I and I wish you the best in recovering what you can from insurance (or hopefully the police). Ignore the folks that would blame you - they'd be just as likely to blame a murder or rape victim.

I'm not justifying the thief's actions, but some people are poor and desperate enough to resort to stealing. I don't think people interpret these types of situations from all perspectives because stealing is considered such an unjustified, selfish act.

I am very pissed today. I neglected to lock the car last night and someone got in and stole my TV (don't ask why my TV is in the car, it's a long story), some clothes my mom was going to return to the store, a biking backpack my mom was going to have fixed for her friend, and a leather coat she just had washed for $40.

The TV is ancient, so I don't know why anybody would steal it, but people who steal are messed up anyway.

Anyway, I want to do something, I can't just sit back and do nothing. But is there anything I can do? I feel so helpless, and angry!

Sorry man, that really sucks. It was probably not a good idea to have that stuff in the car in the the first place. Usually if a thief sees something like, they will get it whether or not the door is locked.

Then they should work for their money, not make it other peoples problem. If your hungry and you want a sandwich, I'll give you a sandwich if you ask me, but don't steal stuff paid for by my families hard-earned money.

...it was too easy for them not to pass it up.
'Cause not being a c*nt is just too hard?
I'm not justifying the thief's actions, but some people are poor and desperate enough to resort to stealing...
I'm very poor, but I don't steal. I know people less poor than me who wouldn't think twice about theft.

I still live in a town where you don't have to lock your doors. My car is never locked, the garage door is open, and the keys are in the ignition. We don't need to lock the house. In fact, a friend of mine doesn't even know where the key to his house is. They opened the door with it when they moved in, and misplaced them since he never needed them. That was 3 years ago.

Where is this town? ....and what hours do you normally work?:D

It's in Iowa. They don't have anything worth stealing anyway. ;)

I live in Iowa (Cedar Rapids to be exact) and I've had my car and home and apartment broken into more times than I'd like to admit. Just a few weeks ago I had someone steal my Sirius satalite radio. They cut the antenna wire off instead of just unplugging it. Way to go, you stole the radio that cost me $20 and destroyed the antenna which will cost more to replace than the radio is worth.

The cops won't even come out if you report it, they'll make a report over the phone and wish you good luck finding your stuff. Like the time I had video of the neighbor kids stealing my stereo (other cars had been broken into, I setup my camcorder) and the cops refused to watch it because "video can be edited". Then there was the time that someone broke into my apartment and stole my laptop. I knew which apartment they were in because it was connecting to my wireless access point. The cops wouldn't do anything, then, either. As a last ditch effort I SSHed into it and destroyed the hard drive, by doing a dd if=/dev/rand to make sure it wouldn't boot. It was a Powerbook G4 probably ended up tossed in a river or on the interstate. Just about made me cry.

The moral of the story is even Iowa has crime, usually more because we have methlabs and the cops here think its Mayberry and don't investigate anything.

Everything happens for a reason, this is a lesson for you (it won't happen next time when you've got a brand new $10,000 TV, your wedding dress, family heirloom, etc).

It's silly to get angry over trivial material possessions. Being angry is like holding a hot coal in your hand, the only person who gets hurt is you.
In other words, move on, s**t happens.

Wow, you're a troubled guy. First, Mom problems, then this? I'd say to file a police report, that really they best thing you can do.

Some of the small towns and villages here in Ireland are like this too.

I have left my car unlocked many a night, usually just forgetting to lock it, thankfully nothing has ever been stolen, but crime in general is my small town is very low.

In fact going on the its own 10 reasons to live here

• Excellent geographical position between Tralee and Limerick, two main industrial, commercial and educational areas in Munster.
• Listowel is a delightful town in which to live due to its close proximity to golf clubs, beaches and superb scenery.
• 30 miles from Kerry Airport and 60 miles from Shannon International Airport.
• Listowel is home to a number of international companies such as Kerry Ingredients and Spectra Laboratories.
• 27,000 people living within 20 minutes commuting time from the Listowel Business Park.
• Listowel is distinguished for its literary tradition and its ongoing programme of cultural and artistic activities.
• A modern 16,682sq ft industrial facility is available at Listowel Business Park.
• Listowel is approx 17 miles from the Institute of Technology Tralee and close to University College Cork, the University of Limerick and the Limerick Institute of Technology.
• 40% of the population in Listowel and its environs are under 25 years of age and 65% are under 44 years of age.
• Listowel is uniquely peaceful with a vibrant community spirit and free from serious crime.

and from the national audit

County Kerry has a low crime rate, a rate which is significantly lower than the Country as a whole. Safe people and safe places are inherent strengths of the County.

Lucky thing they only steal the tv..in my neighborhood they would take the car and leave you a "thank you" note.

You better believe they would hit you up more than once...open cars, bikes on the step...they see that as "you don't want it..give to the needy"

Bless

Putting things in your trunk helps.... That's what I do if I have to leave my Nikon D70s in my car, or my MacBook Pro, which is usually in my backpack anyway. I don't mind doing this if I am parked in a "bad" area of my city for whatever reasons.

But, I always say, if someone wants to break in my car, they will do so anyway, and if they really want something, my alarm will not stop them.

Bad luck. :( As unChristian as it may be, people who nick things should get the birch, IMO. Not for getting something for nothing, but for the distress they cause their victims (not least, a persecution complex).

Ages ago I had my stereo nabbed out of my car via a forced lock and dented door that were cheaper for me to pay to repair than lose my no-claims. A locked door isn't going to stop anyone except the pissed up Uni student who gets the idea to piss on someone's backseat for a laugh. I had my stereo taken so I made sure I replaced it with a removable one. Leaving a TV in there was a mistake you won't repeat...

It's a sick world where we have to preempt crime.

Tourist Board, travel agency or B&B owner?

My father used to say, "locks are made for honest people."
Which means that a determined pro is going to take it no matter what, but even a cursory lock deters casual pilfery.

That said, I had a friend who had a newish Jeep and used to leave it unlocked in NYC and Hoboken when radio theivery was just a part of the daily routine.
He had a sign on the dash saying nothing of value inside and the unlocked doors allowed would-be thieves to test him.

Worked out okay for him. Around the same time I had a thief break my window and *not* steal my radio or anything else.

Go figure.
