Which turns out to be next January for the next gen Intel processors. And what a coincidence that Snow Leopard is rumored to be released around then.

My 2 cents re: lack of new Macs...

You gotta keep in mind that a new Intel platform is around the corner, and Apple will probably wait for that. It would be pointless to introduce new (or improved) models based on the old platform. I know they started early with some sort of Nehalem hybrid in the iMac but I think this experiment was a one-off, not to be used in MacBooks...

Back in the PPC days, nobody knew that the G3, G4 and G5 were coming, so Apple could sneak up and surprise you. But Intel's primary market is Windows-based PCs and they are completely open about technology they have in the pipeline, so you may wanna keep an eye on Intel for hints on when to expect new Macs.

It's to be expected that the iPhone stole the show - it's a brand-new platform for developers. They still managed to keep it developer-centric, even if that did make it a bit boring. Then they livened it up by talking about the 3G model, and everybody complains that it's not developer-enough for them.

Remember that the iPhone uses OSX as well. A developer's conference for Apple devices includes the iPhone as well as the Mac. And given that it's a new platform, I don't think it's unfair that it takes the first keynote, whilst 10.6 comes after lunch. Besides, if rumours are to be believed, 10.6 isn't a very exciting update anyway.

Here's one of the more interesting tidbits from the iPhone site:
More wireless. Less space.
iPhone 3G delivers UMTS, HSDPA, GSM, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPS and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR in one compact device — using only two antennas. Clever iPhone engineering integrates those antennas into a few unexpected places: the metal ring around the camera, the audio jack, the metal screen bezel, and within the iPhone circuitry itself. And intelligent iPhone power management technology gives you up to five hours of talk time over 3G networks. That’s some of the best in the business.

Still, am excited to see what 10.6 brings. Please let it be liveblogged.

Did everyone just miss the point of this being a developers conference? Not a hardware conference. Not an iPhone conference. Developers. Obviously, Apple is trying to pound this SDK into the minds of deveopers by showing them what is possible with the SDK to push the envelope even further.

I'm saddened by the limited scope people on this board have when it comes to discussion of the iPhone. We can't be stuck in the past and cling onto desktops and laptops. With this presentation, OSX Mobile may be on its way to surpassing Windows Mobile, Symbian and Blackberry OS as far as functionality in a year flat...that's remarkable. I think this was a great informative conference and I can't wait to buy the new iPhone 3G. I'll get one for mom too.

Mobile not until Q4/09 though, which means Q1/10 (maybe at MacWorld '10) for release.

I wonder if the "SIM ejector tool" that comes in the box is actually a paper clip. I hope Apple didn't spend time designing and manufacturing their own tool for this...

ummmm no one believed that a new iMac was coming today.
Well, no -- the iMac was recently updated with some sort of Nehalem hybrid thingamabob. But apparently half the people on this thread were expecting other Mac stuff, like Mac Mini updates (or some sort of Mac Nano to replace it), consumer desktops, new 13" MacBooks with alu casing... not to mention tablet Macs or even that iMac-like docking station thingy.

Me to.... Has it been announced if anybody will be covering this?

If the rumors about 10.6 Snow Leopard were right, big chance the same rumors about the 3 s' to be the big features in 10.6

Speed
Stability
Security.

Man i wish the iPhone hadn't taken over this year, i love mine but jeez i was so desperate for Blu-ray support. :(

Ug, just saw the tech specs page for the iPhone and it says assisted GPS which means it won't work if you don't have cell coverage, which sucks. Nice I suppose in that it will probably require much less of a clear view of the sky to get a fix, but I'd still rather have "real" GPS.

The best thing was the software, imo, the developer tools sounded great, and the APIs they're giving devs to work with sound powerful (a full OpenGL library?! Awesome).

I'm sure we'll see some of those items by October at the latest for back to school/christmas rush.

I new iPhone is cool and all and I'm gonna be buying one. But it is a little disappointing with no MMS or video recording and some other features that were rumored to be in there.

im surprised no one has said this yet so I will be the first -

NO MIDRANGE TOWER?

___

I don't even know if i'll be able to sit through the entire keynote when it comes up on apples website. MR provided great updates but the news was mostly boring because we've already heard it all.

Seeing as how without cell coverage you wouldn't be able to download anything into Google Maps to make sense of your current location, i think it's a moot point...
a-GPS is an enhancement of "real" GPS for small devices: It still communicates with GPS satellites but also uses an "assistance server" for those occasions when you can't get a clear lock onto 3 or more satellites

To all those people whining about the camera...there's NO POINT WHATSOEVER in cramming more megapixels onto a sensor of that size! You get more noise, and you get huge pictures that, when taken in anyting but burning sunshine, will have to be reduced in size to be even close to viewable.

I applaud Apple for not increasing the numbers on that one...the sensors just aren't good enough to make it worth it.

anyone know what time things kick off again?

i'm looking forward to the snow leopard part. more interested in the price tbh

also, the iphone looks pretty good. just waiting on the UK price. it said 199USD but u can never be sure how much they'll be in the uk, although we had them as 199GBP at one point, i imagine they'll be 199GBP. uk apple store has them up but with no prices

Hmm, I really wanted to upgrade from my current iPhone, but now I don't really have a good enough reason.

1. GPS is a good addition, but I already have a Garmin.
2. 3G is nice, but anywhere that I ever just sit down to do some browsing has WiFi. EDGE is fine for me when I need to look up a thing or two on the go.
3. Battery life is decent enough.

That's about it for new hardware. The rest all seems to be software. But it does look like an excellent product for everyone that doesn't own an iPhone yet!

Incorrect. The PowerPC macs are still too new to be dropped entirely so soon.

Thus Intel only version. If PPC macs were being dropped completely they wouldn't need to come out with 10.6, they would just make the new 10.5 update run only on Intel macs. PPC hasn't become legacy yet, and can't, really, until that last Apple Care plan expires, but the focus has been shifting to the Intel-based Macs and this is just one more step. I hate that everyone thinks "OMG NEW OS I MUST BUY IT!!!" If you have a PPC and can't run the new OS that will most likely do the exact same thing as your current OS, tough. You'll have to upgrade someday anyway.

I think everything except the Keynote is under NDA, so I would be surprised if anything else is officially reported
