- for starters: a finder that finally doesn't suck, that would be nice ;) (how can people even still tolerate this thing? the functionality is just ridiculous for anybody who has more than 10 files imo) if you use path finder, you will probably know what I'm talking about.

- (as mentioned before): save as instead of duplicate.

- window snapping that is actually good for something (I mean: just step over your goddamn shadow for once and implement the windows style snapping)

- night shift would be cool.

other than that: I'm actually pretty happy os wise. el capitan runs rock solid for me. best os since mountain lion for me.

Also, I hope they get rid of the Dock. It's useless since the introduction of Launchpad.

well, the dock is probably still the single most useful task of the os imo, really no point in wanting to kill that. but I actually use the launchpad too. so yeah, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody... different people use the os in different ways. I just hate it when apple simply denies some of these ways for it's users...

An OS that worked as fast, loaded in as quickly, and launched "apps" instantly as Snow Leopard would be nice. OR just a way to globally turn off all iCloud and mobile "connectivity" "phoning home" to facilitate that.

STILL to much to ask for?

:apple:
Unfortunately, everything behind the scenes has been converted to deamons (client server) instead of programs. This means that everything waits for the deamon to wake up and respond. Instant latency. Open activity monitor and see how many deamons are running. The number seems to increase every OS release.

And where will you minimize programs to? If you don't like it, go to activity monitor and kill its process or something.

Why do they have to go "to" someplace when they get minimized? You can unhide them from the Window menu.

That's fair. I really just want to be able to kill it for me. Simply hiding it, only to have it pop up when my cursor nears that edge of the screen, sucks.

At WWDC 2016 next week, Apple will unveil the next major versions of iOS and OS X. Based on Apple's historic naming pattern, the operating systems are presumptively referred to as iOS 10 and OS X 10.12. However, there is evidence to suggest that Apple may instead rebrand OS X as macOS, in line with iOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

Ahead of the keynote, MacRumors readers have been sharing their iOS 10 and OS X 10.12 wishlists in our discussion forums. For OS X 10.12, some of the most popular feature requests include Siri integration, remote unlocking, Safari picture-in-picture capabilities, expanded Continuity and Handoff features, Mission Control and Notification Center improvements, a system-wide Dark Mode, and more.

This list is great, but very unlikely. This seems like a list of feature apple would take multiple versions to implement.

Amen to your last comment. Having to disable System Integrity Protection by booting into the Recovery partition and then disabling SIP, then modify permissions all to modify a kext like DVDPlayback Frameworks is not administrator friendly. Then, of course you gotta put all the protection back. I don't know, maybe a two factor authentication administrator tool from Apple to do this.

It'd be nice if they fixed disk utility or more unfixed it. They really need to pick a new file system or baring that let people boot of other file system's. Put three finger drag back into touchpad options not accessibility. Try getting someone other than Ive to have a look at the UI

I guess, making the delay time for the dock to appear really long, should do the trick (you need to activate auto hide first, if you haven't)... I would think that, if you move the cursor away in the meantime, it won't show up at all (haven't tried it tho, don't want to mess with my settings :)). but I would try not to make it too long, for the case that you really want/need to use it at some point. start (in the terminal) with something like:

defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-delay -float 10; killall Dock

you can then try to raise that number subsequently. if the dock still appears after 10 seconds, even if you moved the cursor away, you can type in some giant number, like: 10000000000. this would be way enough (many, many years) for it to simply never show. if you want to revert it back to the original state, type:

defaults delete com.apple.dock autohide-delay; killall Dock

...additionally, you can also play around with the overall animation speed of the dock, or the size (wouldn't necessarily use the last one tho)?

defaults write com.apple.dock autohide-time-modifier -float 10; killall Dock
defaults write com.apple.dock tilesize -int 1; killall Dock

ah, I fogot three things I would like to see in 10.12 (make this a little less off topic ha):
- full dark mode
- native ntfs writing
- safari picture-in-picture

Handoff in iTunes. Now that I have all my music in the cloud because of  Music, I should be able to pick up what I am listening to from my Mac to my iPhone when I leave the house....
I have no clue why this isn't the case. That would be a great feature

How about getting file sharing to actually work? It's been a damn crock for about three years. It's easier to connect a W10 machine to a Mac than it is Mac to Mac these days.

It has never been the most stable or easy process, but god it has gotten worse over the past three years. Every new Os they add steps before it comes close to even working. Have to create a contact card in contact, not just able to create a profile in System Preferences etc etc.

The days of "It Just Works" are well and truly dead. They have added so much pointless fluff and guff over the years it is no longer a useful powerful tool. It's a Fisher Price OS on V-Tech hardware.

But if you are selecting multiple files, and right click, press ALT, then 'get info' turns to 'inspector', and 'inspector' calculates the total size for all files selected.

On OS X there is usually always a way to do things, there just not ALWAYS a way to find out how to pigging do it!

Four things:

-More transparency throughout the system (eg. why the hell is Safari grey and not a blurred glass style like the dock?)

- A much more minimal approach to things. Less buttons, hide all extensions systemwide (no, the current thing doesn't work), etc.

- Better iCloud integration.

- More organized Photos app.

Ability to view total size of multiple selected folders in "Get Info" menu.

That's actually possible: hold the ALT key while opening the get info menu.
E.g. press cmd+alt+i having more than 1 folder selected.

A good start might be:
  • Update the antiquated file system to something like ZFS;
  • Make options visible and stop with the hide and seek UI.
  • Return Disk Utility's ability to create RAIDs
  • Update Time Machine so it scales better with large databases and works reliably with NAS boxes
  • Stop with all the phoning home and give users to the option to turn this stuff off via a UI instead of Terminal.app

time machine to iCloud back ups is a dumb idea.
1. They would take forever
2. You'd have to pay for bulk amounts of additional storage
3. iCloud data is not warranted against- read the T&C. Basically there's no guarantee your data is safe from loss.
[doublepost=1465631688][/doublepost]
iCloud is a synch service as opposed to storage service

No, it isn't a dumb idea and it is already being wildly used in a way with iCloud Backups for iOS devices. They just need to extend it to the Mac and provide a separate plan that would include additional data loss protection.

Cloud backup services are very popular such as BackBlaze, CrashPlan, etc and they are doing just fine this area. Apple will handle this better than these services as they can make it very efficient.

1. Only the initial sync would only take a long time, successive increment backups will be very small and extremely fast. They can be smarter and skip your iPhoto stuff because it's already uploaded via iPhoto Cloud Library. Same for iTunes Match and many more.
2. Sync and backup storage do not consume the same bandwidth cost and as such, the price will factor that in. There's a reason BackBlaze can offer unlimited storage for a small fee per month. No one is actually downloading their backups all the time, thankfully. Not the same thing as iCloud Drive, which is a sync service and does eat up a lot of bandwidth.
3. They can change the T&C to include this protection with the separate Time Machine for iCloud plans.

  • Window management: Change the green button to resize the window to the largest possible size with the Dock and Menu Bar visible. A separate button for full-screen view.

You can Option+Click the green button to expand, just like before Yosemite. A fourth button is not needed and would mess up the 3 button look of OS X (or macOS, starting tomorrow).

Make it as small as possible and then put a thin strip of black tape over the bottom of the screen. ;)

What's the old acronym? FTFF? Please, FINALLY, fix the stupid disappearing side bar items bug in the Finder! Fix spaces: When you're using spaces and command-tab back to the Finder, you won't actually go back to the Finder's space unless you have a window open in the Finder, your current app just disappears.

Give us back our named, deliberately arranged Spaces!

Dear God please DON'T carve iTunes into multiple apps. That would be a confusing, inefficient mess. Just fix its interface! The new pop-up menu for choosing media is just stupid (we have the screen real-estate, us it!). Give us more meta-data for files, NOT less: Why can't we have more than one genre for our media files, why do movies only get a release year - not a date? It would be a real boon to those of us with more than one video file to watch on our AppleTVs (not to mention let the AppleTV actually use this info!).

Quit dumbing down the Finder's networking abilities. "Modern computers don't use FTP, so we got rid of it." Why? It was perfectly functional, just leave it alone. Guess what, there are lots of us out there that have very expensive to replace, legacy systems that we still need to network to (i.e.. replacing CNC mills generally doesn't happen every year and they can be used for decades). Were not all 19 year olds who only use computers to access Facebook and can keep completely replacing their computer systems every six months with no consequences.

Admit it, getting rid of "Save As..." in favor of "Duplicate" and rename (by clicking on the name on the title bar? really?!?) was a mistake. It's inefficient, deceptive, dangerous (because of auto-save), and nobody thinks that way.

I have the Dock set to auto-hide. For what possible reason won't it show up when I go to the bottom of the screen in full screen mode? The Menu bar and Title bars return when I go to the top of the screen.

for me the dock shows up in full screen mode. I also have auto-hide enabled. not entirely sure if I'm missing something here... we're talking about sending safari for ex. to full screen, ergo a new space. and then simply using the dock - right?
maybe it's some corruption problem with any of your preference files... I actually dealt with something similar lately.

What I want from Siri is tell the truth about Apple. I want Siri to tell me what's going on internally.
I also want siri to fix all the bugs.

You do realize that hot corners are user defined right? Even besides that, hot corners are not enabled by default, so you must really be a masochist if you've voluntarily set up a feature that you hate so much you wish Apple would kill entirely...

For the rest of us that can use hot corners effectively, Launchpad is the absolute quickest way to open a program that doesn't get opened enough to reside in the dock. Though I will admit, it could use a better way to reorganize app placement and it'd be nice if the stupid programs that insist on requiring behind the scenes processes like "postgres" wouldn't also lead to a bunch of hideous icons in Launchpad.

EDIT: sorry, I just realized you were the one that wanted to get rid of the dock, not get rid of Launchpad (which I still think is a terrible idea). So disregard what I said here about hot corners, as my assumption (humorously) was that you hated Launchpad but had it set up as a hot corner.

Question for all the apparent IT crowd that have requested an updated filesystem: what exactly is the problem with the current HFS+? Also, if the filesystem was completely overhauled, would that not essentially kill compatibility with all HFS+ drives we have in use? I mean I know some filesystems are cross compatible, but if it were anything like using a FAT32 drive with a mac, I say no thanks.
