I've been wondering this myself lately and just so happened to stumble upon theiphoneblog website late tonight to see an article that caught my eye.
When in the World is WWDC 2009?
http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/03/25/world-wwdc-2009/
Last year WWDC 2008 was announced on March 14 2008, here it is now March 25th with still no actual date, just a "see ya in June". I know Apple is changing things up a bit this year with no more MW and a 'release when ready' type of attitude but I figured we'd have something solid with a pretty picture by now.
Anyways, this story led me further to speculate...
Remember the little story that popped up a month or two ago about "two possible dates for wwdc"?
Here's a link: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/03/06/two_possible_dates_for_apples_wwdc_2009_emerge.html
"tipsters informed AppleInsider last week that May 16-22 was reserved for a convention only listed as a "corporate meeting" in the events schedule at Moscone Center, the convention center that has hosted WWDC, as well as the winter Macworld Expo, for many years. Apple has hid WWDC behind that same anonymous listing in years past."
"However, the Baltimore Sun points out today that a second "corporate meeting" was added to the convention center's calendar this week for June 6-12, which seems more likely for the annual developers' gathering. Both listings -- the one in May and the one in June -- are for Moscone West, where Apple has historically held the event."
Ok, still with me? Follow along...
I found this link today that says China Unicom has confirmed they will carry the iPhone and the launch date has (supposedly) been set for May 17th.

"Yesterday was no fluke. China Unicom, with its 150 million subscribers (much more than AT&T), has confirmed that it will be selling the Apple iPhone beginning on May 17th, 2009 to China's 1.3+ billion potential customers."
So. With that information compiled, I wonder what the odds would be of us seeing an event mid-May sometime for the launch of a new iPhone model coinciding with the China iPhone release and maybe yet another event mid-June sometime for official 3.0/Snow Leopard release. (Apple 3.0 media event, "See ya in June") Hmmmmm.
The only thing about that mid-May date is that the 17th actually lands on a Sunday. And the "event" at Moscone is open for 16-22, that's starting from Saturday to Friday. Event Saturday with Sunday release? Nah. Maybe that dates wrong for the 17th and should be the 20th? Event Tues. (19th), Release (20th)? Maybe. Nothing at all, I'm looking too much into it? More than Likely.
But anyhow, I'm REALLY looking foward to WWDC this year and can't wait to see what Apple has in store for us....other than the obvious.
Thanks.
