i doubt the powerbooks will see an update because they were updated not that long ago, but you might want to wait and see if you can wait

im really hoping for some new software - perhaps there will be more on Motion? or updates of old programs, or something else completely new!

Does anyone think new powerbooks possibly? I am in the market for one and could either buy one now or wait a month or so. What do you think?

Honestly, there's absolutely no way this is going to happen. Apple would never release an update so quickly after the previous update.

It hasn't even been three months since the new PBs were announced; even less since they started shipping.

edit: you actually might want to wait a little while. It couldn't hurt to see if you get a certificate guaranteeing you a free copy of Tiger after it is annouced. Tiger probably won't ship until the fall, so you might not get that free copy if you only wait a month, but you never know.

Of course, it might be worth more to you to have this extra month of computing bliss. I bought my powerbook a few weeks before the last update; at first I kicked myself. But now, I'm just happy that I have a great little laptop that I love.

Definitely doubt that. They released the rev. Cs just 2 months ago, so it's not very likely there'll be new ones - much more like a revamp of the iMac!

I'd predict new Powerbooks maybe in October/November, but not before then.

I thought certificates for Panther showed up in late September. And Tiger might ship even later this year. I wouldn't wait 3-4 months just to save a hundred bucks on the OS upgrade.

First off, check out the 'buyer's guide' section of this website. It has some pretty good predictions about what will happen. I think there will definitely be a few software releases, most likely an iPod update (hopefully wireless or some other cool feature), and a new computer upgrade.

I highly doubt that there will be new PB's. Get yours now while their hot ;).

-No new Power Macs (duh); they were just updated, for all of you who think that they'll release 3Ghz at WWDC

-No PowerBooks or iBooks; both were just updated, and why would they stick another G4 in a PB? the next update will be G5s, sometime in Dec. or Jan. (Macworld SF, anyone?)

-Maybe iMac G5s; remember, they said they were having the same problems with the iMac as with the PB with putting G5s inside

-Maybe iPods; perhaps just a capacity increase to 60Gb (thanks, Toshiba, for leaking), but more likely a complete overhaul w/ new features (color screen for album covers and maybe photos, click wheel, etc.)

I think most of the keynote will be an intro to Tiger.

I am guessing a Keynote update on top of the other things...
Its been a year and a half...

I would wager that we will never see a G5 in a PowerBook.

We've seen the major heat issues with the new 90nm chip (Liquid Cooling, anyone?) And I really can't see apple finding any way of putting a G5 into something the size of a notebook.

I'd guess the next PowerBooks will contain some new freescale chip; something over 2.0GHz, carrying a different name than G4. This would make more sense, one chip for the desktop line and one for the portable line, even the PC world is figuring that one out, using the pentium 4 for desktops and the pentium m for notebooks.

Eh, but that's just my 2¢

We will see a G5 PowerBook. It may not be a 970 or 970FX, but it will be a G5.
The liquid cooling is power density issue. The 970FX dissipates less power than the 970 at certain clock rates. But the 970FX is based on 90nm technology which means the die is smaller. Lets say, (for arguement sake) that the 970 puts out 90watts at 2GHz and the 970FX puts out 90 watts at 2.5 GHz and that the die area of the 970FX is 1/2 of the 970. That means the 970fx has twice the power density! Kind of like a light bulb and heat blanket.

No matter what Apple or IBM does with the G5 chips, they wont ever be in the PowerBooks. Sure, the G4s were designed for a desktop too, but they aren't near as power intensive and barbecue-grill hot. I think that it would be more like a G6 or G5M processor, one that is highly modified to be low voltage and around 2ghz.

So that's my $.02

I agree.

My perdictions:

1. Imac G5- 97%, if it is not a G5 then it will be a silent update like powermacs.

2. Tiger ships November

3. a new Mac machine for the 20th anniversery of the Mac( Powermac8,1 anyone)

4. Ipods are announced. Ships July, with a 20 GB,40 Gb, and 50 GB. We will see the 60 GB around November.

(not at WWDC) We will see a G5 in the powerbooks and it is going to be made by IBM. It will be a 130nm chip. Sorry no 90nm for the powerbook just yet.

All 3 models were just recently updated/upgraded, and the Powerbook G5 isn't expected for at least 6 months, if not an entire year.

Remember when the G4's came out. People were saying,"The G4 is to hot to be in the powerbook." Well we got the G4 in the powerbook. So what is different nothing.

.

I'm glad somebody else has the same hopes I do. If they hold out iPod updates till November, wouldn't that be the longest stretch the iPod has gone without an update? We are due...

I'd love to see an iPod update too. Now really would be the perfect time seeing as how millions of other grads such as myself have a bunch of cash on hand and would spent it oh so happily on a new iPod

well...

1. Tiger demo for sure.. this would probably take a good chunk of the keynote

2. ipod... I expect new ipods to come out in 20, 40, and 60 gb models with a mini like scroll wheel. The 20 and 40 would be ready in july/august while the 60 would be available in sep/oct...

3. updated displays for sure so they now match the exterior of the g5 desktops..

4. imac g5? might, happen.... but wouldn't steve want a lot of fan fare for that? perhaps wait unt MWSF for a imac g5

5. new iApp? possibly something music driven? Hmm.... ;)

(*) As far as iPods are concerned, while I assume a 60GB model will be announced, I don't really see this as "news". I'd like to see an announcement of the next gen iPod, at least with a color screen, possibly with ties to AirPort Express/AirTunes.

(*) New displays are a given, if not at WWDC then very shortly after. The current ones are just too old.

(*) New iMacs. All signs point to it. I'm guessing a slow G5 if heat can be managed, perhaps a 1.6 slowed to 1.4 speeds? Undoubtedly, the next iMac will come with a crappy graphics card. It seems to be a hallmark....

Well I've changed my predictions since the LeeTom WWDC thread.

I say yes to G5 iMac, yes to updated displays including a 30 inch model (or something above 25 inches), and a quick mention about the PowerMacs. Oh, and yes to Steve wearing a black turtleneck.

I say maybe to iPod updates - if anything, price cuts on the current mini models - and maybe to updated Wi-Fi iPods. I also say maybe to a brand new software product.

I say probably not to a PDA-like product that gets both announced and released on June 28.

I say no way will we be able to keep some people from ranting on these forums like 13-year-olds after the expo.

That's probably the most realistic prediction I've yet read. My only fear is that the displays aren't released until after WWDC and we all break down and decide to order a current plastic POS only to get burned a couple weeks later by the ones that ThinkSecret predicted...

Me too! I don't *need* it this minute b/c i have a pb but want the ext. display 20", so waiting. I'm not even so concerned with a new model (unless it's something really cool that I totally must have.) but rather don't want to buy a display for $1100 only have it drop in price $300 or more. So I'm waiting til the price shakes out.

My Predictions

Keeping in mind that this is a developer's conference:

Power Mac - NO (just updated)
PowerBook - NO (just updated)
iMac (Power Mac 8,1) - possibly, but more likely at Apple Expo Paris
iBook - NO
eMac - NO
New displays - PROBABLY (maybe even 30 inch)
iPod - NO (look for 20/40/60 GB models at current price points at Expo)
Apple PDA - NO
Announcement of release date of OS X 10.4 - PROBABLY
Announcement that 10.4 will be compiled with IBM's compiler instead of GCC - possibly
"One More Thing" - OF COURSE! :D

Do you mean MW Boston? The MWSF would be too far off for the items you mentioned.

I wouldn't be surprised if new displays arrived either, considering that "brilliant
savings" promotion ends on the 26th, perfect timing :)[/QUOTE]

Very good point..... I thought the new G5's were gonna come out on the 27th to...

I'm praying for G5 powerbooks, i'll be the first waiting outside the apple store near me to order it...But it prob. won't happen :(
