If we're being honest even if X gave people ample notice on the change they still would have complained. So ripping the band aid off makes sense.
If you are on a plan and have prepaid for a certain period, complaining makes sense. So if they want to do this change, it should be "from the start of your next billing period".

That said, one shouldn't give money to the Zombie known to us as Twitter when it was vibrant - anti-vaxxers and other grifters, racists, holocaust deniers, and Russian bots all seem to be amplified these days.

Not really the point but it’s truly astounding how bad of a name “X” is for a product. Like one would think it would get better over time but it’s somehow gotten worse and worse.

It’s a variable/placeholder. Not a proper, instantly distinguishable name that also allows for various verbs and nouns getting derived from it. Twitter had all the good qualities, X has none.

Got to pay for those crashed rockets somehow.

The site has fallen off a cliff since the takeover. I’m not paying a cent but it’s near impossible to see followers on the timeline - use curated lists to see their posts.

Good! Please, make even more overtly user hostile changes! Whatever it takes to get people to stop posting there.

I can't see anything anyone links on X because I refuse to login and use their app. I am aware of xcancel but it's just not worth it.

Yes Bluesky is Twitter of 8 years ago only worse. Non progressive voices are crushed and banned. Bluesky is dead, no-one is there and if you post you have no audience.

You don’t have to pay to use X as a reader.

You only have to pay if you want reach. Even so there are many prominent accounts that don’t pay because they refuse to.

Even logging in is paying. It's incredibly invasive, especially if you use the app, which you essentially have to on mobile since the website is intentionally broken.

It's surprising to me (sigh, except in the current political climate where federal agencies want to stay on Dear Leader's good side), that governmental agencies at all levels (city/county/state/federal) didn't move off of Twitter when it started its rapid slide downhill - move to Bluesky, or even better, put out all their official notices and such on their own Mastodon instances - a standards-based decentralized platform that isn't owned by anyone. Would have helped with the uptake of Mastodon, and the agencies wouldn't be de-facto supporting a privately held company for communicating with citizens (I mean, imagine if the government was posting official notices only/primarily on the wall inside Burger King locations, so everyone had to go to Burger King to read them - who would stand for that?).

Just thank your lucky stars there's no executive order forcing federal agencies to use Truth Social...Yet...

You misspelled the worst elements of humanity.

Amazing how stubborn the general population is. Bluesky is basically twitter from 8-10 years ago and barely anyone uses it. People actually pay for X which is laughable.
Because everyone tried to cancel Twitter by moving to mastodon, realize their big mistake, and moved back to X. Laughable.
