Nope, same results with Energy Saver set to Highest Performance. This seems very odd. Anyone else done benchmarks on a 12" rev B Pbook yet?

Imac 17"

I have a imac 17" g4 1ghz with 1 gig of ram i upgraded to panther ran xbench and scored a 98.7 i was wondering if somone out there that has the same computer that did a claen install could send their score
thanks,

Just ran xbench on my rev B. 12" PB with 768 RAM. Score in Jag: 87.67. Panther: 87.11.

So, I thought, I'll just reboot, clear everything out, and try again. New score: 81.50. Shock and disbelief set in. something must be wrong. I'll run it one more time. 83.54. :(

Very interesting that it's not just me. I'm hoping that xbench is somehow screwing up, and not that Panther has a problem on 12" powerbooks.

Slight improvement.

I tried again and managed to get 92.3 - better than the 70s I was getting before, but not really a huge improvement from Jaguar, and certainly not the huge improvement experienced by owners of the 15" AlBook.

I'm glad I'm not the only one - will be interesting to hear what others with the rev B 12" have to say.

(Incidentally, I am so surprised that the scores you got were lower than mine - I am running the baseline 256MB! What gives?)

well, I used to get an 87... I'd be happy to get a 92 at this point, even though i was thinking beforehand it would go up to close to 100...

um... and now I'm at 97.37. Ok, these scores clearly don't mean much. In 4 tries I've gotten 87-81-83-97.

Look at the individual scores... there is probably one or two items that are varying in a big way and may point the way to a problem.

On a 1.25 PB I got 105 in 10.2.7 and 116 in Panther. Both score were fairly repeatable.

User Interface nearly quadrupled in performance, my CPU went up by 6 points, my disk scores went up by 5-10 points across the line, and my graphics tests were a good 5-8 points higher almost consistently after Panther. I think the areas most affected are the UI and graphics, so since the 15" PowerBook has the amazing Radeon 9600M graphics compared to the 12" GeForce 5200, that could account for the difference.

but the score staying the same or even going down? no, I don't buy your explanation. Every machine, not just PB 15s, has experienced large increases. Powermacs, powerbooks, ibooks, older G3s, everything. It has to be something specific to the 12" that is going on...

How many other computers have the GeForce 5200? Perhaps it's the specific hardware that has a lousy driver or something. It seems odd that just 12" PowerBooks have an issue unless it's something that can be pinned down as "different" from all the other systems from Apple.

right, now that I agree with. I'm pretty sure that the 17" imac 1.25 Ghz uses the 5200, and that it's the default card on the single processor G5s. Those would both be the 64 MB desktop versions of course, but still the FX 5200.

(btw, after running xbench for the 5th time, I got another 97. I haven't a clue as to why...)

22.61 on my good old PB Lombard 333MHz (...any more relaxed Panther out there? )

107.24 Tibook G4 1GHz :p

does anyone else get the impression that xbench is actually rather dodgey. Results
can be all over the place even for similar or identical models or worse the same machine. I run it on just about every kind of mac that will support it and the more you use it the bigger the range of results get.
At best it can be used as a rough guide only. On the xbench site results for dual G5's vary by around 100 points (or an entire 1gHz G4 Powermac score!).There are too many factors to consider when running and comparing computers using such a tool it is best used by individuals on there own macs who know exactly how they are setup and with what spec.

Are all of the 12" Powerbook owners running a clean install of Panther? This might cause plenty of performance problems.

I'll be posting my XBench results soon!

tati:

no, i don't have that one, but i think i should clarify:
- 107.24 (no trick, but tested with my external FW drive - you can easily run Panther from there)
- 101.18 (with internal drive)

after all, it's just numbers...

yes, clean install. My 5 score since Pather are: 87-81-83-97-97.

So I think the thing to do here is to stop caring 'cause it clearly makes no sense anyway. :)

I just tripped into this thread, which turned out to be rather informative.
I'm going to DL Xbench tonight and see how the computer fairs...
iMac 20", OSX, 256+512... I will update this thread tonight!

I included the PDF of the result..
It was running for the past day or so
I thought I had closed all programs, but in reality...
EyeTV was open.. AND RECORDING Live Tv...
Adium was up
AOL was up (not downloading)

I think this is fairly respectable.. no?
I wonder how all the other iMac's faired?
I should do one with NO applications open/running...
:)
