I just recently installed XBMC, it's cool for streaming old tv show episodes.

I like OPlayer HD, I can stream HD mkv files directly off my network shares, no need to download first.

For MKV streaming off local network, XBMC is, actually, more recommended than OPlayer HD. CUrrently, only It's Playing is the only non-jailbreak player to be able to play back network-streamed MKV files in hardware. OPlayer HD can't.

I second the recommendation to get a Raspberry Pi. I run OpenELEC XBMC and I even have full Air Play compatibility from Any iOS device...and all the parts to build it only cost me $70.

Q
Why would I watch brand new shows? Those are abundant in the torrents, and I have tivo, so I can watch that from my iPad.. I got XBMC to have a bunch of entertainment, yet most things I attempt to watch are dead links.

So you can play torrent videos on your iPad no matter the format the file is? Also there is a difference on when to watch something streamed vs download.
Congrats you have TiVo! That doesn't mean everybody has it or cable.
Yes it has a bunch of entertainment on hand and you can stream many hours of many things for free. It seems you don't understand how streaming sites work which is how the repos load the shows onto it. You are complaining w/out really knowing how something works and if you do torrents and even watch TiVo then you should have been able to understands the limits before complaining like a child. Just like torrents that go dead after people stop sharing; sharing sites shoot down streams of viseos that get reported due to copyright laws so you can always stream newer stuff while older stuff is a luck of the draw.

I love XBMC!! But mostly it's because it works for what I like. I'll admit, the learning curve is a bit high at first, but once you get to know it, it is a great all-in-one media app. I don't usually use it to play any downloaded content, but its streaming capabilities are great for me. It's real value for me comes from the various add-ons you can install on it. I mostly focus on the movie, tv show and live streaming sports add ons, which I have found can almost replace most of the regular TV I watch. Granted, it's not all available in HD, but it's great as an add on to the TV I already get through my TV provider. Some of the add-ons I really like are: 1Channel, IceFilms, SportsDevil & Project Free TV. I can pretty much watch anything I want with those, and since I love sports, I love the fact that SportsDevil will let me stream any live sporting events I don't get with my paid TV provider, and I mean ANYTHING. For me, XBMC is the only reason I have all my devices jailbroken, and is also installed on my Mac. I LOVE XBMC!!

I love the concept just not the actual product. Buggy and laggy and the nature of the technology just doesn't lend itself to reliability.

You kidding? Lol. I use xbmc in the living room and it gives me much more flexibility then from a web browser. If you use Project free Tv, Icefilms, Channel one most links work great. It also gives me the ability to show my favorite shows I watch for finding them quickly, show previously watched shows so as not to rematch them, just the new episodes. Ect.

More flexible than a browser yes. But they're advertising it as a cable-killer which it definitely is not. I don't watch TV on a browser in my living room so XBMC has to get a lot more reliable in order to use it for primary video.

Neither do I ( watching video in web browser ) the primary reason for me to use xbmc in the first place. The power is in its use of add ons and plugin's. It does not matter what they may advertise it, but how the average consumer uses it. While not perfect, to me it's one of the most useful.

Yeah it's a fun toy. That's about it. I have all the popular addons they're just not overly reliable. I find a movie or show to watch then it won't load or buffers constantly etc. guess that's the price of free hehe

That is due to the various websites and not nessicarily xbmc. That's why it has multiple links to the same video. In fact, for some reason, using xbmc, it works better then through the web browser for me. Been watch all my favorite shows with hardly much problems.

I showed my girlfriend about all the features and was overly impressed, she's wanting to use it on her own computer to the tv.

So, I would like to connect to my twonky server on my network and stream all of my movies onto my ipad. Is xbmc the ticket for me? Or is something else on cydia better, like rushplayer+

1, does it support SMB?

2, if it does, do you want to play iOS-native files only, or, also MKV's?

Pretty sure no on the smb, it uses UPNP. And yes on the mkv's, actually I have zero ios native files. ALL of my files are mkv's.

Then, get RushPlayer+, it's, speed/efficiency-wise, superior to XBMC. No need to pay for the internal IAP.

More info in my UPnP bible, where I directly compared the two in section "3.7 Jailbreak-only players": https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1503346/

In the latest versions (released after my above post) both nPlayer and EC Player received HW MKV playback capabilities over SMB. Now, they (particularly nPlayer) are recommended over XBMC and It's Playing.

The Raspberry Pi can run XBMC for a fraction of the price of an ATV and no need for jailbreaking!!
I am thinking of getting a Raspberry Pi and am looking at these two on eBay (not affiliated with any of these sellers). Which one would you guys recommend? Also how stable are they, curious if they stay up to date easily as far as the XBMC or it's a thing where you buy it now--and a few months down the line everything is outdated?

Also are they really powered by just USB and have wireless Wifi, what is your experience with them?
