XBOX headset on Macbook Pro

I bought this adapter from radioshack and when I connect it to my xbox headset and my computer I have to speak into the earpiece to get it to work. How do I get this to work?

The MacBook pro is only compatible with 4-ringed headphone/microphone connectors. Like the iPhone headset/microphone/remote

That is if the picture is correct, as people in the comments have mentioned the description doesnt match the picture but you can give it a shot for $2.
