Could you not just keep your xbox 360 ....

TBH I never expected Sony or microsoft to offer BC on either new console.

Yup. BC was a huge thing during the PS1 to PS2 jump, but it's never been a standard thing on consoles.

Really, I think it'd be impossible to provide backwards compatibility for the 360 on the One. Since the two platforms have almost nothing in common architecturally, they'd have to do it through emulation, which would add a massive amount of overhead, and wouldn't perform even half as well as it would on native hardware. The One just isn't powerful enough to do it.

I'm underwhelmed and annoyed by lack of backwards compatibility, but will wait for E3 to judge games to be offered.

BWC will be in the form of buying the game specially optimized for the new console (many games need different rewrites to work under the newer console emulators) and having DRM and working only on that console.

Also, rumors have it that the XB360 will drop in price and people can just use that to play older games.

As for looks, my Intellivision looked (looks) more modern....
70's woodgrain? No, for me, my Panasonic 3DO is definitely the one (at originally $700 it better be.... ;) )

Statements like this always make me laugh. Might just be me, but design is always last on the list. I rarely spend afternoons sitting and looking at my tech products. I tend to use them.

For something that's going to do nothing but sit under your TV and have discs slammed into it, the Xbox One looks fine in my opinion.

Agreed. If my gaming console is the best thing/centerpiece of my living room...I have a crappy living room. It will go in the entertainment center, blend in because its black, and will summarily be invisible because I will be looking at the GAMES...

Plus, it goes back to design for manufacturability, function, and cost (look at cars and jet airliners - more or less they have a common design).

Nintendo Wii, XBox 360 slim, Wii U, now XBox One - all will look like just a black box with an optical drive - optimal for a gaming console.

Yes, it's more about the Games and Controller and UI design, as that is what you are actually interfacing with.
