Is this noise normal?
Someone else would need to confirm as I don't have an S, but it sounds to me like the fan isn't spinning freely. Did it make this sound from the beginning, or is this a newer occurrence? My guess is that the fan either has dust or hair affecting it's ability to revolve quietly, or has been knocked around a little bit.

I have a GOW4 Edition XB1S. Makes a similar sound, yes. To me it sounds like bearing noise, though it could be a combination of bearing noise and coil whine/buzz.

If you google around about "Xbox One S fan noise" you'll find it's quite prevalent. Whether or not it is "normal" and within spec, maybe @XboxSupport on twitter can chime in on that.

There's at least one other thread here too:

I have the limited edition first S with 2TB HDD and it does not make this noise. How was the device utilised (standing position) ? Vertical or horizontally ?

Ok I have found a new 'strange' noise with the 2tb Xbox One S.

It's the harddrive CHIRP

Those who upgraded their PS4 internal drives to seagate 2tb will know about this noise. It's a random and occasional Beep or CHIRP that the drive gives off.

It actually causes no harm whatsoever but it is alarming first time you hear it.

It only seems to affect 2tb drives and up to now only affected PS4's.

However my 2tb Xbox One S (limited 2tb versions on its launch replaced with 1tb & 500gb models) also gives off the same occasional random CHIRP

So if you do have 2tb in either your PS4 or Xbox One S - expect the odd CHIRP and don't be alarmed nothing bad is happening. It's just a freaky anomaly with those drives.
