Along with the release of OS X Lion this morning, Apple also served up version 4.1 of development suite Xcode, available for free from the Mac App Store [App Store Link].

The prior version of Xcode was offered for $4.99 on the App Store to non-developers when it was released earlier this year.

Apple has traditionally included updated developers tools for free on the OS install DVD. With the advent of digital delivery, Apple has chosen to offer Xcode as a separate app download.

It seems likely that the $4.99 charge was related to Apple's convoluted accounting practices related to the addition of features without receiving direct payment for them. Because an improved version of Xcode wasn't originally included with Snow Leopard, Apple was required to charge for it to comply with certain accounting rules.

In its earnings call yesterday, Apple noted a change in how it was accounting for a portion of Mac and OS X sales to avoid such problems in the future.

So Xcode 4.1 is now free as nearly all of its predecessors had been?

Do Apple's accountants work on commission or something?

Apple. New Xcode update strategy.

Step 1: Delta patch the installer containing a delta update for xcode.
Step 2: Run the installer and have it install the delta update.
Step 3: Profit.

This seems doable. Delta updates already exist on the MAS, it's just that Xcode breaks some of the rules so they had to come up with a different method of installation. They didn't think too hard about it I guess...

What's the difference between installing 4.1 from MAS Vs. The developer portal? Do both come with SDK etc? If it's the same I'd rather download from te store.
I need Xcode to work and compile.....working heavily on an update for my app.

They're exactly the same. The Xcode in the MAS comes with everything, including the iOS SDK. (at least it did with 4.0)

4.1 isn't available on the developers portal. Not right now anyway.

It may never be. As far as I know, 4.1 is Lion-only, and since every version of Lion is going to have the MAS, there's no real reason to provide it through a webpage.

Would have been nice for the few of us that don't want to register on the MAS.

Apple is really hell bent on making the MAS a success at all cost. Maybe it will be included on the USB stick with Lion for 70$ in August.

Can someone who downloaded it from the Mac App Store please report the md5 for the installation dmg file?

Thank you!

I'm getting an installation alart asking me to close iTunes part way through - iTunes hasn't been open, and yet...

Anyone got any good ideas?

Edit: Terminal "killall iTunesHelper"

Case sensitive (for when future google searches pull me back here ;-))

Tried being clever and putting back the Snow leopard installer to see if there was a way to get a delta update... Nope, tough luck, now just have to wait arg...

Thank you sir! Exactly what I was looking for.

There is no Lion in the iOS portal though (I'm not a Mac dev)

There is the free section of the Mac portal though. You might be able to grab it that way, unless the Lion stuff is still marked under the "beta" section rather than "released" section.

Well, it comes up as free on Snow Leopard, but when i try to install it says

"Xcode Install Assistant can't be installed on Macintosh HD because Mac OS X version 10.7 or later is required."

Does that mean only Mac with Lion installed can get Xcode 4.1 for free? what about Snow Leopard? No more hope?

Won't install

I tried to install it and got that "Need to close iTunes" bug, so I just force-killed it and restarted my machine. Tried to run the installer again, it got about 98% through and just hung there forever. I finally force-killed it and tried again, hangs at 98% again. Guess it doesn't want to work for me!
