Does that mean only Mac with Lion installed can get Xcode 4.1 for free? what about Snow Leopard? No more hope?

4.1 is for Lion, 4.0.x is snow leopard.

I had problems installing 4.1 also. After download and an immediate install (as in instant, which was weird), it turns out it never really installed. I had to manually uninstall my old Xcode and go into applications and click install XCode. Then it worked perfectly

how do i uninstall xcode 4.1 guys?

There is a script that will remove the Developer folder, system headers, and developer CLI programs. Look around for the release notes; it should tell you in there.

A few tips from my installation experience:

1) If you get the "Please quit iTunes!" message when iTunes is closed, open up Activity Monitor and kill iTunesHelper.

2) If, after installation, Xcode crashes with an internal error when you try to start it up and/or the welcome page is unresponsive, close Xcode and reinstall. It fixed it up for me the 2nd time around.

Thank You!

I'm getting an installation alart asking me to close iTunes part way through - iTunes hasn't been open, and yet...

Anyone got any good ideas?

Edit: Terminal "killall iTunesHelper"

Case sensitive (for when future google searches pull me back here ;-))

I had the same problem:
Upgraded to Lion, downloaded Xcode 4.1 from MAS, installer stopped 2/3 of the way through with the "please close iTunes". I closed iTunes, nothing happened (waited about 10 minute).

So I restarted the iMac, restarted the Xcode installer (did not redownload it). Did not start iTunes. Got the same "Please close iTunes" message about 2/3 of the way through.

Went to bed.

I'll try killing iTunes helper tonight and see if the Xcode install works. Thanks.

Thank you. This helped me out too.

Am I missing something or is Apple

So - if I have Snow Leopard and want to upgrade to XCode 4.1 I am out of luck?

So Xcode 4.1 is now free as nearly all of its predecessors had been?

Do Apple's accountants work on commission or something?

I bet this has to do with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

If you read the notes from this week's earnings call, you'll see:

Now deferring revenue recognition for Lion sales, recognized over period of three years. Same with iCloud. As of June 6th, Apple is deferring $22 of revenue from each Mac sold to be recognized over a period of four years. Also deferring $16 of revenue from each iPhone/iPad and $11 from iPod touch to be recognized over two years.

I believe this deferral of revenue allows them to not charge for things like the xcode. It's all accounting nonsense, but the nonsense is required by federal legislation.

We all pay for that nonsense legislation.

I understood that Apple viewed it as a SO issue, but I'm not completely sold on the tenants of the legislation requiring these strange micro-payments, it's more Apple's own accounting practice (please see comments here if you're interested).
But, thanks for quoting the relevant part of the earnings call.

I bought Xcode 4 in the Mac App Store long ago, this looks like a totally separate app since I can't just update it. I have to redownload the whole thing. Does this mean I can delete the old Xcode now?

I downloaded the Xcode for Lion one. Uninstalled the old Xcode for Snow Leopard. Downloading from the Mac App Store downloads an installer first, now that I installed Xcode can I delete and uninstall the installer?

Yes. However, but for some reason App Store will no longer think Xcode is installed once you delete the installer.
