Hello,

I've just bought a second hand XFX amd radeon 7950 double dissipation graphics card! I was planning to use it in my 2009 mac pro (4.1-flashed to 5.1).
Unfortunately after installing the card in the mac and whilst the two power cables are connected ,the fans of the card spin for a split second and then stop completely. There is no image on the display as well. I know there's not supposed to be a boot screen since it's not a flashed card. But after a minute of waiting the login screen doesn't show up.

The card does work in a normal pc!

Is there a way to get this card working?

Greetings, Jelleko

Good morning,

Sounds to me like you've got a fried card. First and foremost, I would take that back wherever you purchased it from and see if they will replace the card for you. If not, check with XFX and see if you can do an RMA. If you've never done an RMA before, it's a little time consuming, but for about $15ish postage and a bit of patience, they basically send you a new card in return for the old. IF all of those options are no good, (and basically as a last resort) you could try a card bake. I've used it to revive my old NVIDIA 7300 GT from my 1,1 Mac Pro 2 times now. It's not a fix though, more like a temporary stall.

So to answer your question, not really. Not a ton you personally can do without doing something drastic. Just try to exchange or get your $ back if you can, and if not, do an RMA.

Good luck - sorry about your card.

Thanks for your reply!

I just put the card in another windows machine, and apparently the card itself is ok I guess. This time I did get an image on screen! But.... the fans are still dead :( so I quickly removed the 7950 to prevent overheating.

it's still strange though that the card seems to try and spin up it's fans, but after a half a second it just stops. they may spin 3 or 4 times and then it stops. I've checked if anything is blocking the fans, but there isn't anything that blocks the fans.

I will try to RMA the card, but it is still strange that all of a sudden the fans do not want to spin up anymore. They were working fine for 3 days in a test PC. After these 3 days I have put the card in the mac pro which resulted in the fan problem. After putting it back in the test PC (where it previously did work) it also does not want to spin the fans.

Is it perhaps possible to flash the card and with it solve the problem? perhaps a bit has gone missing or went on vacation?:p

Greetings, JelleKo

The only way that makes sense is if someone already flashed it and used incorrect rom.

XFX typically leaves the 2nd EEPROM off these cards so you can't just flip switch and find out.

If it was me I'd dump the rom and see if it has strings that show XFX in the opening first 1K. If not it likely has wrong rom.
