Even the iPhone 20 won't have a 1" camera sensor. The few specs and dimensions Apple does use on their products marketing are representative of real world measurements.

The term 1" camera sensor is from the film industry in the vacuum tube and CRT days over 50 years ago. Now 1" camera sensor is a marketing ploy used mostly to piss off photographers and I guess fool the unsuspecting buyer. Sensors aren't really measured diagonally (actual sensors) plus there are a lot of factors that go into its useable size however if you actually measured a 1" sensor diagonally it would be about .56". But I guess technically it could be whatever size they wanted it to be...🤷‍♂️

camera sensor size photography guide

high Apple tax for much lower tech... Apple costs more than Androids because of the software(not copy paste) 🤣... there are costs... an Android with a 5" camera sensor doesnt make it better than an iPhone with a 1" camera sensor. its all about perspective and needs.

If you really want to take good photos, get a mirrorless camera or dslr. There is no way a smartphone will beat a Mirrorless/DSLR anytime soon.

Well some very expensive compact size cameras have 1” sensor too

Yep, it is literally impossible by the laws of physics, without drastically increasing the size of the smartphone to the proportions of a DSLR camera.

Honestly I cannot tell the photo quality different between a high end 1” compact Sony camera and a normal DSLR

Then why compare Xiaomi's upcoming 12S Pro 1" sensor(made by Sony with Leica collaboration) vs the current iPhones or upcoming iPhones? Youre just here to troll Apple... Always has been...

Everyone has a choice. IOS or Android it depends on the user. I have seen long time Android users move to IOS and they are happy with the decision and vice versa.

You needing the 1" sensor on a smartphone doesnt mean i need it. And using a 1" sensor on an Android is easier as the OS is widely customizable. On an IOS it will need perhaps an OS overhaul. Which means its gonna cost more.

And even if Apple decides to give the iPhone a 1" sensor. Im 100% sure you will be complaining next about the megapixels... Owh why only 20MP. Why not like Xiaomi 10000MP? Why pay high tax yada yada...

You don’t need it doesn’t mean Apple camera hardware is not far behind

are you serious? the latest iPhone uses Sony camera and so does the Xiaomi 12s Pro... it all depends on what each brand wants to use... its not all about "hardware" but its all about needs... want perfect photos? get a Huawei P series...want perfect videos? get a Sony Xperia...

and even if Apple decides to make an iPhone with 1" sensor + 100MP you will be complaining about screen refresh rate(why not 500Hz Refresh Rate like BOE gaming monitor),battery size(why not 20,000mAh like Anker powerbank?),headphone jack(why no headphone jack when even $50 Android has one),notch(why not full screen display like Asus Zenfone),gaming mode(why no gaming mode like ROGPHONE?) and so on...

Even some Redmi uses Sony sensor, Sony sensor has all kind of grading. iPhone sensor size is far from the biggest that Sony can offer.

Actually, as a 5 inch sensor would be large format it would technically beat any mirrorless/DSLR because it'd be around 8 times larger. No need for computationol photography there, it's physics.Only you'd probably need a lens the size of a shoebox to get a 50mm fullframe equivalent.

Big sensors are great but we still use 2/3 inch sensors for TV-News. Gives you quite an advantage when it comes to zoom range. Can't do that with full frame. Eventually, computational photography will make most hardware obsolete, but that will still take a few years/decades.

Physical sensor size doesn't make a lot of difference to the software - it just needs less light, so less processing power for denoising - or better low light. It also lowers depth of field so more blurry backgrounds without faking them like in portrait mode.

Ok but some androids take better pictures. I’ve never owned an android but the Samsungs take sharper pictures. There’s only so much software can do.

1" is already pretty large. The differences the bigger sensor of a fullframe DSLR will produce will be more sensitivity because of bigger photosites (so less noise in low light), less depth of field (more blurry background with the same lens) and a wider field of view with the same lens. If you compensate for that (e.g. stop down the iris & zoom in on the full frame camers) and have enough light there won't be much difference. It's just a matter of handling.

On a smart-phone with a lens that's not as tall as the phone is high, you can only use a very wide lens on sich a big chip. So you're using that hige chip mostly for computational photography - pixel binning for better low light or high resolution for better cropping - it's not compareable to a dedicated 1" Camera with a "proper" zoom lens.

Agreed. However, the camera you always have with you is often still the best 😉

Also, like Sony it’s clever marketing. It’s a 1 inch type sensor… it’s not 1 inch.

Where does your argument come from? Chinese company has a lot of money, they may bring a lawsuit against you if you say something online against them without any proof.

Assuming you are just referring to the camera.

Actually they can. Depends on what you are shooting. A DSLR has the advantage in zooming with the proper lens, and pixel count if your are cropping. They don't have computational photography and there are cases other than the above where they can take better pictures than a DSLR.

some androids take better pictures.

True, but changes from year to year.

Nobody would be willing to spend $1000 for a Xiaomi brand, no matter the spec.
Apparently there are. I remembered Xiaomi selling the Mi 11 Ultra for $1000+ and people were buying it. I almost bought the 11 Ultra but thought it was a waste.
