I'm so glad I didn't get that XM radio a few years ago now! And I feel for all those that have the XM or Sirius built into their cars.

I have Sirius built in to my car. Please, don't waste your time feeling sorry for me. One of the reasons I bought the car I did was because I could get Sirius and I absolutely love it. I've been a subscriber for 4 years, and will continue to be one as long as I can. I'm done with crappy old terrestrial radio.

EX: I mainly have XM, but owned a Sirius radio for a while to. I listen to Ethel on XM, and Alt. Nation on Sirius (very similar formats). While there wasn't much of a difference in the music they played (the Sirius station actually played some selections that I wished XM would hunt out), one of the female DJs on Sirius made me want to tear my ears off. Not as funny as she though she was, and definitely did not know as much about music as she wanted to believe.
I think I know who you're talking about. I can't stand her either. I can't stand any of the DJs and wish they would get rid of them all. When I'm not listening to Howard, I usually listen to the 90s Alternative station because they play good music and don't have any DJs.

Now that's what I am talking about.

Just classify the music into genres, and I will decide if I like them or not.

I don't need, nor do I want, someone to tell me some BS about what I am about to/just listened to.

How is this merger not seen as a monopoly?

The reason this is not a Monopoly is because It's a PAID service. You don't have to have it there are other options. FM radio, Ipods, etc...

People throw that word around Monopoly way to easy anymore... Your not forced to do this. Hell they allowed MAJOR Oil companies to merge quick and it effects every one of us!!!

As for how the service will work they stated until 2015 or so that they will remain two separate satellite services baasically. If you have XM you will still get all the stuff you had but if you want howard you will have to pay a little extra for it so you monthly fee plus soething more for the extra channels..

Same for Sirius. You will get your same channels and if you want something from XM you will end up paying extra for it..

No rates or plans have been announced but Mel Carmonson (however its spelled) said the above on Howard show last week..

There are no commercials, and since it is a pay service there is no censored content. The reason Howard Stern left for Satellite radio is so he would not be bothered by the FCC.

Actually, Howard Stern left because they offered him 1/2 a billion dollars over a 1/2 decade period. I can only imagine the difficult situation Sirius XM will be in at expiration, they certainly can't afford to pay the same or more. I suppose Howard will choose the highest bidder, whether that continues to be Sirius XM or becomes another entrant.

XM being built into my car was one of the big features I was looking for in a car when I bought mine. It still works and with the merger, they have promised that my stereo will still continue to work for years to come. I may however not wait that long. I didn't want the merger to happen because I always hated Sirius limited playlists. XM was always known for it's extended playlists, digging deeper into artist catalogs and playing bands that Sirius wouldn't. XM had a punk channel as an example long before Sirius did. XM also had several industrial music specials throughout the week, Sirius didn't.

I've been an XM sub for over 4 years now and always enjoyed the music that I liked being played on it. Sad to say, I will be canceling two of my three XM subs as soon as the music changes begin taking place. The one sub I will be keeping for a while will be the one in my car. XM was the only reason that I never bought another stereo to replace it with and soon, I may just do that.

I exclusively listen to NPR on the radio. No commercials and it's free.
Well, I would not call it "commercial free". During the fund raising periods, they cut away to five minute cheesy "begging sessions" after every five minutes. :)

I wish there was a way to donate in a more directed way. I'd like to support the programs I follow regularly, but I can only donate to the local station, which has no idea which programs I actually enjoy and shares the money among the radio and TV.

UPDATE:

Just got an email from XM stating that the "Best of Sirius" is now available on XM for $4 a month. It seems to include the NFL, Howard Stern, and more. Don't know about Sirius doing the same thing 'cause I'm only an XM subscirber.

Here's the link.

XM gave me a call, asking when I wanted to add the "Best of Sirius" to my XM subscription. I told the telemarketer that I picked XM because I loathe Howard Stern, have 7 kids and thus no interest in a Playboy channel, and don't want the myriad of ESPN channels as I hate sports. She had to talk to her supervisor several times, during the call. ;)
