Unlike SLR's which can produce RAW images (images without any kind of image processing applied to them), all phone cameras use some software to manipulate the image based on light source, how steady your hand is, focal point, compression etc. You can use two identical Xs Max phones and take two pictures you think would be identical but the image processing is slightly different which can provide better or worse output.

I can compare them on my screen and then judge for myself which I find better.
Sure you can though your opinion is pointless for any objective conclusions so what’s the point? Generating more useless opinions?

OP, your opinion on this subject is something you text your friends about. It's not worth it's own forum thread.
And that’s your opinion? ;)

The XR performs better in low light imo. Especially portraits. Since the XR uses the wide lens and the XS also uses the telephoto, which is worse in low light. Other than that the cameras are the same imo.

I was waiting for that. I wasn't "griping", but I don't think a general query to the community about experience or observations for people with both phones in the household without pictures falls into the same category as "the XR is king". Interesting that you defend that post, thanks for your comment.

Your in MR. Its like the Twilight Zone. You can’t have consistent expectations when setting up a question. ;)

I guess you are right. Haven’t posted in the phone forum in a while but I’ll definitely use caution next time. Seems everything gets challenged from every angle. I posed my question with all good intentions.

I am interested for myself because for me that’s in the end the only opinion that counts. I can or cannot share this opinion but in general sharing is what a forum is used for.

The current iPhones support raw.

I have the Max and bought three "budget" XR's for the kiddos. I swear their pictures come out better. More vibrant and colorful. We have taken the same shots and the difference is re-markedly noticeable.

Anyone else find this? Kind of sucks to have paid $500+ more and not have better photos.

So a more saturated photo makes it “better”. :p

Raw is not an option from the native camera app.

True but raw has been available since the iPhone 6 with 3rd party apps. One certainly is not locked in to the native app. Many of the 3rd party apps are better imo.

I have no idea, but to my eye I guess maybe over a washed out photo with gray tones.

So you’re saying the XS Max (and I guess XS) take photos that are washed out with gray tones and the XR does not ?

I’m saying that I have taken a picture with my max of a subject and my daughter has taken the same with her R and to my eye the R looks more vibrant where the Max is a little gray

Are you looking at the pictures with the same screen and lighting conditions? The same picture(s) can look very different on different screens and lighting condition. I used to work as a Color Matcher for an automotive paint manufacture and to truly check the sprayout panel to the OEM standard visually I would have to take it into a lightbooth and check under different lighting conditions (Daylight, Horizon and Ultra-Violet (Metamerism)). As funny as it sounds checking color on the flop (different angles) can also make color look different. I would also think this applies when someone is comparing pictures.

Post up a couple of pics. I really want to see a gray XS (XS Max) shot that was not intentional shot as B&W. :)

But really, post up a couple of pics to show what you’re seeing.

I think I am going to let this thread die. It has turned into a competition of sorts of people defending their beloved phone whether it be the XS or the R. It clearly struck a nerve. It was just something I have been meaning to ask since the R came out in terms of has anyone noticed this or is it me. I'll conclude it is me for the sake of argument. It's just not that important and I actually don't even take that many pictures. I'm good, in 9 months I'll have the next release (gotta love AUP) and it will probably have some super-duper camera. It's all good.

Everyone is insecure and has confirmation bias as a result.

Seriously though, I think it would’ve been much better to look for media outlet and YouTube reviews comparing the two cameras (such as the one from MR that I provided earlier). Folks here get their panties wadded up a bit too quickly (especially when they drop $1,000+ on the “best” phone).
