iPhone XS Max XS Max Color disappoints

Hello MacRumors!

Powerful, efficient, productive. There’s no doubt the latest phones are software and hardware mastercrafts.

Beyond storage size, choosing between space grey, silver and gold are the only significant choices. Deciding which colour has been very difficult as they all seem like bad decisions... that’s why I’ve taken to MacRumors to discuss with people who own XS Max’s - to talk with the people who chose colors and changed their minds, people who stuck with their choices, people who regret their choices, people satisfied with every choice etc.

Here are my takes on the colors:

Space Grey
Conservative, classic, timeless. Looks great but feels really boring. This is certainly the safe option of all three. Before I could open it I had changed my mind and returned it because it felt too safe.

Silver (current choice)
Flashy, young and classy white back with black front! The incredibly shiny silver on the sides looks... cheap and trashy. Having a black case with a clear back looks very stylish however it is very distracting when laid flat.
And I’m still not convinced about the silver Apple logo...

Silver looks like the one someone who thought really long and hard would pick only to be filled with regret and doubt (yes I’m describing myself, I have a lengthy return window yet it’s still torturous).

Gold
Bold, loud but sadly so gaudy and tacky. The gold sides are nice but still feel cheap like the silver but not as much. The skin/tan back looks like a bandaid or a pair of women’s underwear but feels very soft on the eyes unlike the silver. Rocking with a brown or red Apple leather case would look very stylish with the gold hints or having an all clear case. The gold does have a very care free attitude attached to it.

A phone at this price point is as much a piece of tech as it is a fashion statement and also are expected to last.

Please discuss! And do not take my quibbles personally!

For what it's worth (€0,0001)... Last year, I opted for the space grey which I think looks super nice. This year, I got the silver and I don't find the sides or back, or any other part of the phone, to look cheap. I think it's a very elegant looking phone and I don't regret my choice at all and would opt for the same color again, given the option.

In fact, while I'm sure the gold looks nice, too (as does the space grey), the silver version feels somewhat nostalgic to me (reminds me of old Apple products) and thus has a higher perceived value to me for that reason alone.
 
Went gold this year because I had the silver model earlier and didn’t like it very much and black felt too boring.
 
I'm in the same situation as OP. I had space gray for a year with my X (and every iPhone prior) so I went for the silver this year. In the past I've tried this and always ended up exchanging because I couldn't get used to the white front either making the screen look more yellow or the white screen making the bezels look dingy.

Now that the front is all black, I thought I'd take advantage of the silver back showing fingerprints less. Well, just like every other year, my phone has made its way into an Apple leather case and the small amount of chrome flashing around on the bottom just doesn't look as good as the shiny gray, IMO.

I would have returned it but the criminals at Verizon make you pay a $50 restocking fee if you want to exchange.

They are really only 2 choices IMO space gray and silver. I don’t like Fake gold tone on anything. Not real no deal.
 
All my previous iPhones were black (space gray), always wanted to try gold if they made one with all black front with no white bezels. I couldn't be happier, no regrets. I will however be returning to black (space gray) next year.

It looks somewhat like a shoreline gold depending on the lighting, but I agree... they change their idea of gold often lol.

Space grey seems to vary too. It looks like a lighter grey on the back of the iPads (unless they are only counting the bezels as the color which looks black), and near black on the iPhone X/XS.
 
I have a gold iphone, cause I thought it looked nice. A phone as a fashion statement? Really? hahaha. no. Just no.

I'm all about simple elegance, so space grey is my choice. I personally don't see the point of numerous options. Would be curious to see stats though. Wonder how many people stick to the conservative options and how many go for more eye-catching ones when they have the option.
 
apples gold is a muted blush soft color. Its not very manly like a bold darker color. The band on the xs/xsmax is nice though. Just ruined by the off white cream gold of the back.
I wouldnt mind a gold phone if it was more bolt. darker/orange color not this muted crap
