This has happened already 3 times just web browsing using Safari. After about 5 min the screen auto dims and i notice the phone getting warm. Shut all the apps and restarted the phone only to happen again. I can play games with no overheating issues for hours....just web browsing. Anyone else have this issue? I have auto brightness turned off.

If it’s evident with only safari then the chances are that you might be going to some really poorly developed sites.
^ This.

The screen automatically dims when the phone gets hot.

Unless you are outdoors and direct sunlight is heating up your phone, there is some excessive javascript running on whichever websites you are visiting.

The XS Max is actually the first, out of all my old iPhones, that doesn’t dim due to overheating. Was the worst on my 5S, that thing was actually almost always in overheat mode and it would be a breath of fresh air every time the screen would actually brighten up. Oddly enough, back then it didn’t really bug me at all. Today, that would drive me nuts! I also rarely use Safari since I like Chrome more, so maybe that’s why I haven’t noticed any overheating issues.

I visit the same websites for over a year accessing them from my bookmarks....the X never had this issue. Ill do more testing and see if i can duplicate it again with the exact websites i had visited.

Funny thing is i never had an iPhone ever dim on me since the 3gs and i always have the auto dim turned off.

It could be that the site has changed its underlying code. You won’t know unless you inspect what’s going on technically. It might look the same but do a lot of other things in the background.

After much testing i was able to pinpoint to the 9gag app. With all other apps closed and just using the 9gag app....it will overheat after about 10 min of use indoors with room temp around 70

Nice one. What does that app do?

Anyone who has played ingress knows that phones dim when they get hot. My Nexus 7, 6+, 6s+, and 8+ did this. Never played ingress with my Xs Max as I’ve retired from ingress. Nothing I’ve done with my max has gotten it hot. This phone is a beast.

Screen brightness. XS Max consumes 4.20 Watts at full brightness with a full white background.

I noticed this when I was in Hawaii like I could clearly read everything and suddenly it would dim itself but it showed the brightness being up all the way even though it was brighter a few minutes ago
