I bought xtorrent and am beginning to regret it.

I have a mac pro, and every time I boot xtorrent up it slows my computer to a choppy halt. This is ridiculous! if it has more than 20 torrents it will freeze immediately, otherwise it just slow the computer down significantly, and will freeze it after 5-10 minutes.

It has even gone so far as to delay all processes on the computer by a minute (while it's running), and just today made itunes non-responsive.

AARRGH!

I want to like this app, but it refuses to work.

Please help.

20 torrents!? what on earth are you downloading?

oh oh oh. that's right, 20 different linux distros :p

Thank God Azureus is finally not an option anymore. Unless you're a power torrent user...(not even sure what that would entail...or why one would want to use the insane amount of options in AZ)

Transmission is tracker friendly now, and I rarely download "one" torrent out of many so....ya, Azureus is a thing of the Java past. good riddance

i love azureus even tho i use transmission. you can prioritize files to be downloaded within a torrent. you can pick and chose individual files. there are plug-in's the can be added.

there really isn't a better client. only nicer. and on windows, it runs without a hitch. i wish i could say the same about it on os x.

On the 'doze I am a big fan of BitComet, but I honestly haven't tried many others.

It's either Azureus or the Transmission nightlies.

I think xTorrent is a better app than either of those. If they add the selective downloading (already promised for next version) and fix the issues with my computer then I won't feel any remorse over my purchase.

20 torrents!?
Actually 20 is a bit much. I'd be wary of opening that many on a 100mbit connection all active even if I had the computer only for torrenting.

utorrent wins, hands down. other than the latest developments, that is.

xtorrent is BASED on transmission.
azureus beats the *&#$ing pants off of all of them and is one of the most powerful clients regardless of platform.

no way in hell xtorrent can even dream to come close, even without the pricetag.

I personally don't like the look or feel of AZ. I like Dave Watanabe's style, and I hope that he can fix the problems I've been having.

I'd rather not start a plain old flamewar here. I would rather get some help with xTorrent. Does anyone have his email address? I am having trouble finding it, and I don't want to use the feedback feature on xt because it may freeze my computer. If so, either post it here, or PM me.

xtorrent is ridiculous, come on paying for a program that's based on an open source project!? azureus is good but it's too wasteful, stay away from java programs, your basically running a machine on a machine!!

as for transmission, it's great it always downloads at a speed close to my bandwidth when finding enough peers without using much resources. since i started using it never looked for a new client.

Personal beliefs are great, but I just don't like the people who go all "az sucks" for no reason. Just stating the facts, if you stil like xtorrent, great. :) I don't deny it has a nice interface, but well...looks aren't everything to me.

Dave Watanabe's email address is davew@xlife.org

Depending on exactly what is being done, HotSpot can be faster than the traditional speed powerhouses of, say, C++, assembly...

Plus that's not to mention Java has some benefits over other languages, and depending on whether or not you need to take advantage of these languages, there is no reason to cross Java off of the list until it's explicitly unacceptable (e.g. no java devs on a project...).

As for your "machine on a machine" statement, pray tell how you describe the likes of Parallels? Plus, resources are not as scarce as they used to be and computing power is growing constantly. Given the nature of Azureus requiring a large amount of resources to constantly read/write data in addition to hash checking and tracker announcing (which is true for other clients as well - uTorrent isn't the beautiful tiny resource footprint using thing it's touted to be when you have 10 active torrents....) in addition to anything else you may want (encryption, tracking, all those gazillion plugins, IP blocking...) it's really not surprising. I'm not saying Azureus is a well designed app, but more that even though it looks like it's really hoggy it's nothing new and almost expected given what it does.

I have, because I still use trackers that ban/dislike transmission. it didn't take much to get in, but I'd like to stay there with acceptable ratios for starters, nevermind all the other things I need and want from a torrent client.

Plus, transmission is iffy at initial seeding, so...

Totally unrelated, but the title of this tread reminded me of that really old arcade game with the alligators that you used to mash with the mallet. The alligator head would pop out, you'd smash his head and then he'd say 'ouch.' After a while, he would say "Now I'm angry!!" and then the alligator heads would pop out faster...

Just thought I'd throw that out there. I guess it's time for bed =/.

I'm not saying that java is a bad language or anything , hell i do java programming sometimes, it's just i think that java is better suited for closed systems or small programs but not a full program. also a java program is always slower than it's counterpart native version due to the virualization of course. i guess the main reason for java in azureus is portablity.

I don't usually like to pirate things. I usually find it morally wrong. But, If i would use a app it is transmission. I have only used that for a few opensource apps/SuSe

If I do want to use Xtorrent for large torrents, I use this script I made to shut it down after 10 minutes then reopen :)

I'm not denying most of your post, but that sometimes in some ways hotspot can make java apps run faster than their c++/assembly/c counterparts.

i'm actually sort of glad that azureus is the way it is right now because if it wasn't for the increased operating system portability, macosx would quite possibly have no such advanced clients available. and for those people who absolutely need azureus over other clients, it's a blessing.

Downloading on Transmission

Ok I'm confused. 1. On Transmission can you download full movies and 2. How do you start to download movies in Transmission? I tried by typing the movie in the like bar on the right, but nothing happens. What to do?
