Yahoo today announced the launch of a new group messaging app that it's calling Yahoo Together, which features built-in organization and smart tools to make it easier to streamline conversations about different topics.

Yahoo Together supports different groups, such as family, friends, book clubs, etc., with conversations able to be split up by topic. According to Yahoo, this is designed to allow users to follow the they care about in the group conversation while muting the rest.

The app, which looks a lot like Slack and similar services, supports the sharing of videos, photos, and other file types, all of which are uploaded into a shared library accessible to everyone in the group. Powerful search tools have been included to help users find specific discussions and content easily.

Shared calendars let Yahoo Together participants plan events, and built-in reminders make sure everyone knows when something is happening. Users can also set up a custom reaction that can be inserted into the chat with a tap, which Yahoo says is ideal for inside jokes and catchphrases.

Yahoo Together is available for download on iOS and Android devices starting today.

AOL kills theirs and Yahoo! makes another.

And here I am, still using ICQ.

Sweet, can't wait to use this!

As an aside, it's still 1999, right?

Yahoo is still a very major player in Asia. I can’t speak for other countries, but they’re pretty big in Japan.

Yah-poo should be eliminated from the gene pool of the Internet. It's a homeland security front for spying on user data and they need to be sued for all of the breaches which have happened and they've apparently gotten away with and they're still constantly nagging about blocking ads!

Maybe instead of killing off their messenger, then launching a different one, they could've… upgraded it?

Serious question here.... While I understand that everyone wants to make their web presence relevant, why would anyone think that what we all are waiting for is another chat app. Sorry guys that's old news. We have SMS and for us iPhone users iMessage. We don't need anything else.

The chat app wars are just as entertaining as all the Windows/Linux/Apple wars of the past decades. I'm a Teams girl myself :) All depends on what your environment is. Each one has it's own niche.

Yahoo! Japan now has no direct relationship with Yahoo! since the creation of Altaba.

I refuse to agree to Verizon’s new terms of service and once I can decouple Flickr from my yahoo email the service will be dead to me.

Lots of rightfully justified scorn for Yahoo, but I think many of the young’uns in the thread might not appreciate the original gestalt of Yahoo. Actually pretty cool and if you aren’t aware, worth reading about their history and culture.
