MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.11

I'm using Yahoo Messenger for Mac version 3.0 beta and recently my display images have stopped displaying when logged in or when I open a chat window.

When not logged in and I am selecting a user the display images show, but they go out as soon as I login to any name. When I go to the window to set my browser image, the image field displays blank even after I try reloading the image. I have trashed my Preferences and that doesn't work.

If anyone can offer any help or insight it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Try this:
1. Run the Disk-Utility->Verify Permissions. (this itself didn't work for me, but it's always a good idea to do this every now and then)
2. open a Terminal window and type the following:
$ cd $HOME/Library/Preferences
$ chmod 666 com.yahoo*
3. Then change your display picture.
4. Go back to Terminal and type this again:
$ chmod 666 com.yahoo*
5.) Wait 5 min. For some reason, it takes a bit for Yahoo to register the new display image.

I'm having the exact same issue -- I don't recall when exactly it started, but I know it has been in the last month or so.....this is the first thread I have been able to find with someone else having the same issue! Thanks for posting!

Unfortunately this did not work for me. I've also tried reinstalling yahoo and have the same outcome. The picture shows as I am logging in, however once I have logged-in the picture disappears. I am then able to go into preferences and reset the pic, but as soon as I log out/in, the pic is gone again. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Agreed, thanks for the post. Same issues for me, started about a month ago. I know it worked with Snow Leopard for a period of time and I have also tried to revert to the previous version of YM, so I'll chalk it up to something on the Yahoo servers for now...

and by the way, no luck for me on advice in #4.

As I haven't used YM myself, I can't judge, but I recommend using Messenger through Adium until Yahoo fixes up everything.

I have exactly the same problem. I have to set my display picture everytime i sign in, and it's annoying :(

Since I started this tread in Nov 2009, I have gotten a newer MacBook Pro now running OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. I went through all of the quoted steps and this did not work for me. I use several Yahoo Messenger screen names and the problem exists for all of them. However, in the last few weeks I have noticed that the image for my primary screen name, which I use most often -- and is the only one I sometimes update to display on any regular basis, will on occasion, display without me reloading the image for each session. No exact pattern has emerged, but it seems to display approximately every second or third time I login.

So weird, and so typical of Yahoo. Contacting them is pointless because all they do is reply with an auto-message that is unlikely to even remotely refer to the issue you wrote to them about.

I've also come to discover, Mac version of many programs are the "red headed stepchild" to the Windows versions!

Still, looking for a solution if anyone has one! Thanks!

Yahoo Messenger Display Image not working

Hey folks. I am having the same issue. I decided to send a note to the Tech Support team at Yahoo. They said they were looking into it. Although I am sure it's just a line, I guess some reply (other than an autoreply) is better than nothing.

Here's their response:

Issue: Display Image

Good afternoon.

I am using Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Every time I log into Yahoo Messenger
for Mac, I have to reset my display image. It isn't saved when I log
out of messenger. Others are having the same issue. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/818364/

Is there a plan in place to fix bugs in YIM for Mac?

Thanks.
David E

How to reset your Profile image for Yahoo Messenger 3.0 Mac

Hello everyone,

Here is what I did and it worked for me. On some systems, Yahoo Messenger 3.0, even though you are trying to add new profile images, will lose the data once you log out and log back in.

Taking advice from some others on this thread, here is what I did:

1) Turn off Yahoo Messenger
2) Through Finder, go to Home>Library>Caches and deleted anything related to Yahoo Messenger such as Yahoo! Messenger, com.yahoo.messenger3.

Note: Your previous profile images are stored in Yahoo! Messenger>Display Images in the above mentioned Caches.
3) Although maybe unnecessary, I suggest restarting your system.
4) After system restart, turn on messenger.
5) Select your profile image and it should now stick...

I am using Lion and do not see any of these files. Any suggestions?

It worked

I am using Lion and do not see any of these files. Any suggestions?

Wowiezowie's suggestion worked for me & I can now see the pic I selected.

Lion, by default, hides the Library folder so you have to access it from the Finder.

Close Yahoo Messenger & make sure Finder is active.
Go to the bar at the top of your Finder window & click Go menu
Click Go To Folder...
Enter ~/Library/Caches into the box & click Go
Delete the 2 Yahoo folders Wowiezowie mentions.
Restart your computer (may not be necessary)
Open Yahoo Messenger
Change the display picture.

Thanks Wowiezowie :)

Update to wowiezowie's post

My problem what that I couldn't CHANGE my Profile Image. It would be stuck on the old one regardless of making changes in the Yahoo! Messenger Preferences.

So taking wowiezowie's advice, looking in the Username/Library/Caches/Yahoo! Messenger/Display Images:

This is where your profile pic resides. So to fix, I copied the filename of the old pic that was in there (even though the image in the cache folder was .png, I copied the filename including the .png and renamed my new .jpg profile pic (you'll have to confirm using .png).

Messenger now displays me new image! Thanks all. Hope this helps someone.

Update: nevermind. My little trick is temporary apparently as the image must be coming from Yahoo's servers and the old one overwrites the new photo. If you quit YIM and open it again, the pic is still the old one. :-( Sorry, nothing to see here, move along ...

Thanks, wowiezowie, this finally worked for me too.

Like many others, I was stuck for a while, and this just started happening a few weeks ago. I couldn't even change the picture — either turn it off, or use the old one. It was weird. I did delete caches and so forth, but I missed the com.yahoo.messenger3/ folder, which finally did the trick for me.

Im new to mac and having the same trouble:confused:. Im running Lion and tried the suggestions but didnt work any new ideas?

Thanks

I started this post and this problem was resolved for me a long time ago after Yahoo Messenger put out a new update for Mac. I am currently using version 3.0.1 with no problems, so my suggestion would be to check if you are using the latest version of Yahoo Messenger.

Not so, I have latest version of yahoo messenger to this date,
and i'm having the same issues

deleting those caches, works

seems like the only solution to this date

All of the above didn't work for me. But here is how got it fixed on my machine under OS X 10.7.4

close YM
go to library/caches as described by slamb43
go to Yahoo!Messenger
go to Display Images
here you see your image file as a .png
rename it and change the .png to .jpg and move that file to any other directory
double click on the file image cache.plist which should open in Xcode
go to your account name
click on the triangle pointing east
click on avatarHash and click on the "-" sign
click on displayImageChecksum and click on the "-" sign
close Xcode
go to YM and your image should be gone

Good Luck

This worked for me. Thanks.
