I see that with Mojave, Apple have finally removed AIM account options from the iMessage Preferences.

Was Yahoo! Auctions a thing outside of the UK? Same as eBay, but earlier and a free service. Was great until eBay really took off globally and Y! Auctions shut down.

I used to use Adium to have all my messengers in one place. I miss those days. It was a great app.

Indeed, it was a great app! I still use it, though the only service I have hooked up through Adium now is ICQ. With the demise of most of the large legacy IM services, it's now a bit less useful (but it does support a bunch of other messaging protocols).

I don't know anybody who still uses Yahoo Messenger. I know tons of people who use MSN Messenger and Microsoft was smart in migrating them all to Skype.

Just curious, since I haven't used Telegram, but how is it better than Apple Messages?

It allows you to use a screen name, thus not revealing your telephone or email to everyone you speak with. Telegram registers your account to your telephone number, so people who already have your number will automatically find you on Telegram (no search required; you show up in their contact list immediately when they join, and vice versa), but it does not reveal your phone number to people who only know your screen name unless you expressly share your number with them. I believe you can also register to a Google voice number if you don't want to be found.

It also supports VoIP voice chats, video, etc. and works pretty seamlessly across iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, web browser, and even Windows Phone (for the less fortunate). Your entire message history is synced to any location you sign into.

Telegram works well and you need not worry what platform anyone else is using; it's fully functional on all of them, AFAIK. It's a great way to chat and get work done, IMHO.

ICQ! That used to be my jam back in the day. Hadn't thought about or used that in a loooooooong time. Can't believe it's still going, but looking at it's competitors, I'm glad it's them.
My wife and I still use ICQ daily to chat to each other, as it works well across our Mac desktops and our Android phones. It's been under Russian ownership for a while, though, so no doubt they're collecting all sorts of information about us that will ultimately bring down Western civilisation.

And then there was one.

ICQ is now the last man standing among the original “big four” of AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN.

These days, I’m a Telegram user; it does a great job with a limited, very useful, platform-independent set of functionality instead of bombarding the user with advertising.
I still remember my 7-digit ICQ number. In the mid-to-late '90s it was just as important to me as my phone number.

I had a five digit number, and was kind of fond of it, but my account was hacked, and I lost it. I had some remote contacts who I lost contact with which sadden me a bit. But when I tried to sign up again, I got a I think 9-10 digit number, and found that was boring so I abandoned ICQ at that time. But it made me much more security conscious and I guess something good came about it.

I have no idea what this service was like. I've never known anyone who used it. We all used AIM, and I knew IRC users. Discord is the new best.

Yahoo just needs to close shop. One of the most useless websites ever existed.
Worse than useless since they apparently distribute malware now. There were Yahoo! toolbars and adware all over my teachers' and grandparents' computers when I was in high school.

first AIM, and now this? How will I chat with my buddies and meet new people?
No one seems to remember Windows Live Messenger (aka MSN Messenger), which was discontinued in 2014.

Of the original popular messengers, ICQ seems to be the only one still alive.
