Yahoo released an updated Sports app, giving us a selection of personalized news streams, scores, notifications and video content.

The new app design has four tabs — Favorites, Sports, Headlines, and Alerts — with the Favorites section offering a personalized stream of news and video content based on your favorite team selections.

And now the bad news... they killed the "dark mode", leaving us with only the ugly white-screened option. This is a total fail, IMO.

Yeah they really should have at least provided an option for dark mode (given that it's basically entrenched in the history of the app). Perhaps it will come back in an update.

That said, quite a bit of my usage of the app has been mostly through its widget, which doesn't seem to be working properly since the recent update (at least for me)--at first I saw the games that should be there, but they weren't getting updated, and when I did some troubleshooting (like restarting the phone, logging in and out in the app, reinstalling the app) the widget simply stopped showing anything at all.

Fantastic. I love it when a dev completely hoses their app... especially when it's something that I use regularly.

Wonder what's next... weather? news? mail? Looks like Marissa Mayer is bent on total destruction of the Yahoo brand.

Not sure if anyone is using the app widget (for scores and upcoming games), but can anyone check theirs to see if it's working for them and showing recent scores and/or upcoming games for their favorite teams (perhaps even if you aren't normally using it you can try to add it in the Today section of Notification Center and then remove it once you take a look)?

And you are seeing it refresh or basically have updated scores and gametime for games that are in progress? And the right scores for games that have recently ended?

(I wonder what's going on with mine.)

My team isn't playing yet, so it hasn't updated, sorry

No problem. If you see how it behaves when a game is on and/or once it ends, let me know.

I also noticed that the date/time of an upcoming game in the widget was appearing in dark font where it's harder to see now (since the Notification Center background is dark as well). Not sure if that's the case for your as well.

As far as the dark mode goes, it might be worth posting about it on Yahoo!'s official forums where someone created a thread about it already at https://forums.yahoo.net/t5/Sports-apps/sports-mobile-app-background/m-p/31080

Yahoo! representatives seem to actually read the feedback there and often respond to it, so could be worthwhile to add more voices to it all.

Score hasn't updated for me on my favorite
So the game is going on (or perhaps ended) but the widget isn't showing the score, just still showing the game as if it hasn't started yet?

Yeah, that doesn't sound all that good. Seems like this recent big update messed up the widget in one way or another. (Perhaps among other things as well since I'm also seeing alerts that I didn't enable before showing up now as well, like for news leagues/sports I don't follow or for teams that I didn't select any alerts for, and even if I change the alerts to what I want them to be, at some point those unwanted ones seem to be back for some reason.)

Yep, I too got some "new" alerts and immediately went in and found others enabled that I promptly disabled

I'd probably keep an eye on those, and perhaps check on them again at some point (perhaps even more than once) as it seems like they get re-enabled at times for some reason.

I'm looking for a new sports/scores app... anybody got anything decent (read "usable")?
It can somewhat depend on what sports you mostly follow and care about (and their countries) as well as what's more useful/important (like a widget would be thst for me).

That said, there are certainly some of the more mainstream/general options like ESPN, theScore, Team Stream, Sports Scores & Alerts, CBS Sports, FOX Sports, etc.

For me, I use Sports Scores and Alerts. It's lightweight and the widget is awesome because you can see all scores, not just your favorite teams. During MLB and NFL season, it's great for following scores. It doesn't add a lot in the news department, but I use ESPN's app and even the iOS News app for that.

The widget for that app is definitely one of the better ones. The only thing it doesn't quite provide are scores for favorite teams from yesterday for example, which Yahoo! Sports does (or at least used to do)--kind of going back a bit and even in the future a bit beyond what's just today. It can also be somewhat limited in the sports/leagues that it supports, depending on what is of interest to someone.

That said, the app is fairly straightforward at least as far as scores go, and does have a dark mode too.

Heard back from Yahoo! customer care who have been in touch with the Yahoo! Sports product team and they are aware of the widget (and potentially other) issues and have an update that should address those which they hope to push out sometime soon.

And, hopefully, they will restore the dark mode so that the entire app is once again usable.

I'm not sure I see dark mode coming back as the default necessarily, but I can see them adding it as an option perhaps (not sure if it would be part of a smaller 6.x.y bug fix type of update, but perhaps as a slightly larger 6.x type of update a bit further down the line). That is assuming they haven't given up on it completely with the new redesign and don't want to even consider dark mode, even as an option.
