Millions of Mac users likely use Yahoo services.
What makes them crooks? Unethical, yes, but crooks? Was there a massive stock sell off in 2014?

No one has been criminally indicted, much less charged, so I suspect that language was being used casually. However, the problem here is that Yahoo did make financial disclosures, some of which arguably are inconsistent with prior knowledge of this issue. Securities violations can subject corporate officials to civil and criminal liability. It doesn't take a stock sell off for a major securities violation to occur, and corporate officials are responsible for accurately reporting to the financial markets.

Ya Who? Its about time for this company to either be absorbed by a relevant an competent company or finally have their slow decades long death spiral come to a final end.

Marissa Mayer really did a number to this company and somehow managed to walk away with a massive fortune.
Can't wait to see who hires this lady to take the helm of their company with all this "success."

Yahoo! has many different companies underneath including Tumbler and Flickr. The fact they waited so long to let anyone know about the problem is incompetence at best. They need to investigate and someone needs to be held accountable (i.e. fired, fined). Good luck with the purchase Verizon - seems like a bad deal all around.

Edit: my comment about the subsidiaries was just me wondering how far this goes? Because you sign in to all subsidiaries with the same login, you are exposed in areas you may not even be aware of.

Needing an adblocker these days is just as important (or actually more important) as an anti-virus software installed. I have been to legitimate "trust worthy" websites that have ads, dealt with them, but have encountered infections due to the insecure-ness of ads on websites. I do not mind ads. But do not make me compromise my computer security.

Ekk, I hope I've never gotten infections... but I've certainly seen some horrific ads, and technology used to implement them, which can cause all sorts of issues from messing up page display, to crashing the browser, to causing slowness, etc.

I suppose I do need to start thinking about a anti-virus type tool/scanner one of these days (after 30 years of not worrying about it). Any suggestions? I prefer ones that I just run on demand, as the ones that constantly run often cause more trouble than the viruses. (From my PC and past-Mac support experience.)

Thanks to Yahoo's incompetence the identity of every member of my family was stolen.

Yikes. You (and your family) need some serious education on basic internet/computer security. You should NEVER use the same password for more than one service. Then you'd only have had Yahoo to worry about. AND.... be VERY careful of security questions! I've got an article with lots of details here: http://www.cgwerks.com/yahoo-hack-password-management-problem-security-questions/

Hopefully their change in leadership will actually improve things. I don't think we should cheer the death throes of any giant corporation; the next one could touch a lot closer to home.

I suppose not, but at some point, maybe it is better they just go away and let others that can do it right, replace them. And, I guess I am worried about 'closer to home' these days with Apple. :(

They should consider her to replace Cook :p, Let's see how many people on this forum will hate on him after that!

For Windows, I use ESET Nod32 (just the AV, not the security suite). I have never had any issues with it even running in the background. VERY lightweight.

For my macs? I do not use anything.

Unfortunately, IMO, they seem to have a couple of major things in common that I don't like. They both forgot the core business and things that made the company great, and then took a Business-school 101 approach to growth. Cook just has a WAY bigger head start, and the company wasn't three-quarters ruined when he took it over.

Wow, that's one I haven't heard of yet. Thanks, I'll check it out. Yea, I meant more for Mac, but see they have a Mac version. I think one of these days, we're going to have to start worrying about it, on the Mac. (My Windows machines are just VMs that I don't worry about too much.)

I have used it before on my Mac. It was just as lightweight as the Windows version. I barely noticed it was running.

If you want one which is on-demand only, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac should fit the bill.

Thanks, I just generally don't like to install anything extra like that or have anything running that doesn't need to be. :) And, so far (knock on wood), running stuff like that on the Mac hasn't been necessary. But, every now and then when a Mac starts acting up, it would be nice to be able to run a scan and check.

That looks like what I'm looking for, thanks.

Marissa Mayer is the worst CEO in history
Single handedly destroyed everything good about Yahoo, inlcuding Sports and Email and what was great about yahoo-finance, including decimating the message boards.
Hopefully verizon will be smart enough to restore Yahoo to pre-Mayer glory
Unfortunately that stupid b will walk away with tens of millions of dollars for her failures

Yahoo was still popular and was still the best website all around (sports, mail, finance, message boards).
Mayer ruined every part of the site and when people complained she ignored them

Among dozens of other sites and similar (or better) services. Yahoo, IMO, was dead when they decided to stop being the best index of the Internet. They started buying companies and services, trying to be a bit of everything and doing it poorly. And, they really missed the boat in terms of opportunity to buy the right things to stay true to their core (if they should have been trying to expand services in the first place).

But yes, even floundering about with no mission, they certainly could have done better at it. :)

Do you have a suggestion of which site to switch to?
I've tried MSN.com and a bunch of others but none offer the amount of info Yahoo does-finance, message boards, sports, news, etc

This is why I've only ever used Yahoo as my account for spam. I just really questioned the safety when everyone I knew, including myself, sent out emails to other people without our knowledge. That has never happened with Gmail.

I just typically scan Google News for USA and Canada (where I live), as well as local. That's probably more news than I care to get from MSM anyway, but gives me a quick feel for what's going on. When I want to know something specific, I just search for it (i.e. financial, sports, etc.).

Then, if you want to get more balance, I'd recommend a few podcasts, actually. The nice thing is you can listen to them while you're doing dishes, driving, etc. Congressional Dish is a key podcast to *really* know what's going on in the USA gov't, as they won't tell you (or may even mislead you) in the above, MSM news channels. And, while it's a bit crude and irreverent, I also like No Agenda for their media deconstruction (expose some of the biases and fake news on the MSM). Then, I listen to 1A from NPR, which gives me a take on how the 'left' is seeing things. (Note: the Congressional Dish host is left/progressive, but she seems to report accurately... you'll just have to decide if you agree with her take or not.)

If you need more than that, then you probably should find something better to do with your time. :)

Podcasts aren't good at work.
You see, no one site has everything under one roof, which is what drew me to yahoo in the first place.
Hopefully Verizon will fix things when they take over

I suppose I should have checked it out more, but aside from the financial stats (and sports? which I don't follow much) it seemed to be more pop-culture and late news. My wife always used it and would tell me about stuff I already had seen elsewhere 1/2 to 2 days later... and it seemed pretty MSM.

I lost interest after they ceased to become a good Internet directory, and Google came along with far superior search. So, after that, I just didn't pay much attention to them anymore. I guess I used a Yahoo related service from time to time, but hardly ever went there purposely.

I suppose there are some resource there and probably good people for Verizon. I guess we'll have to wait and see what becomes of it all.
