how do i jailbreak it? is it possible if i buy it now cause ive read a few posts saying that there may not be a possible jailbreak for iphone 3GS

Depends, there is never really a way to tell for sure. Let's hope not, because If for whatever reason you want to downgrade the OS, I heard that Apple stopped signing older firmwares. But I assume there will a hack that will bypass this. But no one knows at this point for sure.

You should also note that if your phone comes with 3.1 or you ever upgrade to 3.1 using Apple's version of the 3.1 firmware, you may never be able to unlock your phone. The new baseband (the part of the firmware that operates the phone chip) has not been hacked and for all we know may be unhackable. You will still be able to jailbreak, but perhaps not use a foreign SIM.

No the baseband and the ECID are different. The baseband once updated can't be downgraded, unless someone finds an exploit to do so. And usually the BB updates. cover up all the exploits used for Ultrasn0w

Those two files are only useful in jailbreaking, and it is no longer possible to retrieve them since Apple has stopped signing the firmware. It is possible that someone will come up with a workaround to allow jailbreak without those files, however (chronicdevteam claims their greenp0ison unlock won't require them).
As for unlocking, that has nothing to do with those files. As I understand it, Apple has greatly reduced the number of commands the baseband will respond to, plugging holes that in the past were used to get around the SIM lock. In this case, the simpler the program, the harder it is to hack.
ETA: I hope we haven't rained on your parade. Congrats on finally getting an iPhone! you're going to love it, I'm sure. It really is an awesome phone, and well worth the hassle of dealing with firmware upgrades. After all, it doesn't happen every day. ;-)
