That's a fair point, but you could swing that the other way as well? You "think" Apple didn't intend this. I "think" Apple did. It's a fact, no matter which side you're on, that the 12 line of iPhones are more yellow (or "less white") than the previous models. The evidence to the contrary is so small compared to the mountain of evidence otherwise that I think that's a safe conclusion at this point.
If we want to get anecdotal, within my family alone, we've had two 12 Pro's, two Mini's, and two regular 12's. All from different retail sources, all ranging from the release date until this past week. Every single one of them has a screen that looks more yellow than previous models. You have reviewers and experts stating the same. You have "display experts" observing the same. And yet not one of them has jumped off this cliff stating it's some sort of chronic problem that needs a fix. It's just the way they did it this year, generally speaking.
My issue isn't the subjectivity of the matter, or whether or not there's a little inconsistency. My issue is, as someone else stated earlier, the "get your pitchforks out!" attitude of this thread from the start. The reason I think this is blown way out of proportion is because of the inherent nature in how a problem like this flows.
- Sensationalized post about yellow screens
- People get new phone and the screen looks more yellow to them
- They google it and find a thread like this and think, "omg me too!"
- Because essentially every iPhone 12 is like this, the forum "beast" feeds itself, perpetuating the hype
- In actuality, most people complaining about this "issue" have a phone that is simply less white because that's how Apple made them this year
I
think the majority of people complaining about the yellow screen simply have a phone designed as Apple intended it this year because that's what the evidence suggests to this point. The sensationalism of the beginning of this thread is what's pushed so many people to think this is a systemic problem rather than what was intended. Because of all of that, I
think it's a small subset of users that truly have screen issues.
In a few months if Apple comes out with some sort of recall, then I'll eat my words. But the more likely outcome will be one of two things. Either Apple will silently "address" this by tweaking True Tone to be a little less warm, addressing the "problem" for most people. Or people will simply stop comparing to their older/other phones and get used to it.
Sorry, that got way too long...
