For calibrating my workflow, I profile all of my displays, as well as my printers, with a Gretag-Macbeth i1, a $2000+ device (FWIW, the newer and much cheaper X-Rite Colormunki works just about as well, and is easier to use.).

Is the i1 D2 any good? I definitely can't afford $2000+, but $200 is alright for a good color profile :)

Yes, it's a nice little unit; when I bought my son the Colormunki, I looked at the less expensive i1 units, including that one. I own what is basically the i1 Extreme now, although it was owned by Gretag Macbeth before and had another name (and was even more expensive).

Isn't that just the viewing angle? If you tilt the screen backwards, the bottom white block will probably become fully white, and the top one will fade out.

that's the thing, is it's NOT the viewing angle. no matter what vertical angle I look at the screen from, the bottom square is always a dingy beige/yellow color. it's the same problem as the other "yellow tint" threads - the bottom portion of the screen has a gradual yellowish gradient that gets worse towards the bottom of the screen. hence why I pushed the lid all the way back, to make the screen as unobstructed by reflections and such as possible, then took the photo head-on, the way someone would normally look at it.

and yeah, I know the picture sucks, I have a ****** camera and shaky hands, sorry. The basic idea should be clear though. I just don't know if this is how the display is SUPPOSED to look, and I'm having a problem with calibrating it, or there really is a defect out there that I've been unlucky enough to get twice in a row.

Hence why I want someone with a "perfect" HR AG screen, with no yellowing on the bottom, to post a picture, so I can at least know that these perfect screens exist out there in the wild. I do not have any calibration tools besides the built in color utility, and as far as I can tell, I calibrated it perfectly. On each section, I made it so the apple was as indistinguishable from the background as possible, when squinting my eyes it disappeared almost completely. For the gamma and white point I basically left it the same because it looked perfect to me as it was. Did I do something wrong? I hope this is an issue of calibration because that would be easy to fix...maybe someone with a pro calibration setting could post theirs, and I can at least see if it makes the yellow tint issue go away.

Thanks all for the replies.

I have a 17" i7 Anti-Glare. I don't have any yellow tint issues but the bottom of the screen is slightly brighter than the top of the screen. I believe this is a very common issue with TN panels.

Did you use this attached test image with the white squares on the top and bottom? Are you saying the white square on the bottom is the same whiteness as the top square when looking at each square dead on at eye-level?

But.....

It sounds like this is just 'how it is' with these panels. The 15" high res (both glossy and anti-glare) look good, they just aren't perfect. The people that say their's are 'perfect' just don't notice or they aren't using the test pic to test with. I am sure others will note the same thing once they finally receive their replacements.

I'll probably end up keeping my 15", even with this defect, since it is minor.

Bottom line is that it's just not a perfect world.....

No, it's not the same whiteness because the top of the screen is darker than the bottom of the screen. This alters the contrast I guess and thus the color is not exactly the same. But it's not a yellow tint to my eyes.

By the way, I found a gallery of images from the anandtech review that display the issue I'm talking about. This makes me feel better that maybe this is "normal". Image 4 shows it pretty strongly, as well as the one with the solid green.

http://www.anandtech.com/Gallery/Photo/649/4

With my display I don't see a yellow patch, or the types of defects seen in the anandtech gallery; but the screen is not quite evenly lit (and I wouldn't expect it to be, it's a laptop after all). We had most of the studio lights set up for a location customer shoot so this is down and dirty, not exactly a product shot. The walls in this room are yellow by the way, I think you can appreciate that from the nice yellow cast the bezel takes on.

In practice, I think the mind kind of filters out these subtle differences across the screen, I've spent most of the day working on the laptop and it hasn't bothered me.

This is my first time ordering a computer, and this is one of the reasons I have been aprehensive, if something is wrong (seems likely at this point) it will take forever to get returns and all that, as opposed to just swapping it at the store...

pretty much the main reason I went with the anti-glare over the glossy. I would have preferred the glossy, but the thought of having to ship it should there be any problems was a deal breaker. Besides it turns out I love the anti glare just as much (if not more). Kind of sets the MBP apart just a little bit from all the millions of others out there, plus it looks really snazzy too.

On the topic of the screen issues, I decided I will try exchanging this one for the last time. Going to set up another "genius" appointment on friday and hope that the third time's the charm. If it has the same problem, I think it's pretty safe to say that this isn't just bad luck.

I have an appointment with a genius tomorrow. Will let you know how the exchange goes down. My glossy HR has yellow tint on bottom 40% of the screen. :(

some better pics of the issue

as you can see the last one (white box test) fails the hardest. Don't know why but that one really shows the dull yellowish tinge the worst. Again, theres are taken with low brightness, no key lighting, no ambient light, direct angle.

I have a 17" glossy and there's a yellow tint at the bottom as well, but it's not too bad. I'm not sure I even would have noticed it if I didn't read these forums.

I went to best buy today to look at the macbooks they have on display, and all of them -- the 13", 15", and 17" -- all had a yellow tint. (But, the 13" was better than the 15" was better than the 17".)

I'd be interested to hear if you guys who are exchanging your macbooks ever manage to get a perfect display. Plz post some pictures if you get a good one

I never would have noticed either if it wasn't for MR...this forum has ruined my life in so many ways :(

Seriously though, I decided not to schedule the genius appointment. I realized that the problem isn't so much "yellow tint" (as it clearly was with the imacs for instance), its more an issue of uneven backlighting. The bottom of the screen just isn't as perfect looking as the top. I don't really want to go through the exchange process again, but should I decide to I guess I have another week or so to figure it out.

I'm hoping the guy who had a genius appointment today comes back and posts his results. I'm betting it's going to be the same thing as he had before.

That other poster above, ubercool, went to the genius bar and got the return process started for his CTO. He posted a separate thread about it. It will be a week at least until he gets his replacement. My replacement should be sent out in a day or so, so I should have it in 10 days.

I'm guessing all the replacements will have the same screen inconsistencies. I'm thinking I can live with it the more I use it.

Bad luck, mine is perfect for my eyes, thus I dont care to even bother checking for tinge.

Why ruin a good thing if you cant tell?

Forget it.

Can you guys quote what panels (manufacturer/product number) you guys have?

Please refresh my memory how you do that again, it's not listed in System Profiler.

That's good to hear. Now I'm thinking myself if I'm over-reacting and if it can be solved with an exchange.

Actually, I just did an accounting of all the primary Apple devices I have bought in the past decade and it added up to 13! Of those, I have only returned one iPhone, the 2G one, and now the MBP. So 11 hits in 13 swings is a pretty good batting record. :p

Anyone have any luck getting a replacement with a 'perfect' screen?

I'm curious to see a photo of a perfect one.

IMO I have this kind of "perfect" screen, got it on my first try. Unfortunately I have no camera capable of making a good photo. Its white from top to bottom, it just has some uneven lighting (barely noticeable, none of my friends noticed it unless you REALLY look for it and know where it is)

So yeah, don't give up, they're out there.

Its a i5 HR AG with the Samsung panel.
