    RIP.

Sad news, indeed. The cast of TOS is starting to get smaller more quickly.

Very sad, she and Nichelle Nichols were great role models for women. :(

We lost another Star Trek Original Cast Member :(

Yeoman Rand played by Grace Lee Whitney has passed away May 1st at the age of 85 :(
I'm a huge fan of the original Star Trek and always had a special place in my heart for Yeoman Rand. I'm 63 and the reality of our mortality is becoming more and more real everyday :(

While I agree with you wholeheartedly, let's not sell Majel Barrett short..

While the actual TOS series was before my time, I don't recall a female first officer in any branch of the military at that time; yet there she was.

Man, I haven't though about Yeoman Rand in at least forty years. As a child I had a real boy-crush on her. She had a certain sadness about her and seemed particularly vulnerable, and it struck a prepubescent chord in me. I didn't know she was an alcoholic (I didn't know anything about her until tonight) and now I believe she was channeling her real-life problems into her ST role. I think that is a sign of true talent. Anyway, R.I.P.
